Summary: In which Sam reflects on the popular philosophy "What Derek wants, Derek gets." One-shot. No slash.
Disclaimer: If I really owned Life with Derek, it would not have ended without Derek and Casey jumping each other's bones. And since that did not exactly happen, do you really think I own it?
What Derek wants, Derek gets. It's always been like that. Even when we were little.
Once, when we were at the park, there was this girl. Courtney, I think her name was. Anyway, Derek and I were playing sand hockey (I guess we liked the sport then too…), when Courtney came up to us.
We were the only other kids on the playground, and she wanted to play with someone. In specific, she wanted tp play princess and castle with someone.
So, Derek, after protesting (his "manhood" did need to be upheld after all you know), obliged. I was the evil dragon despite my willingness to play from the start, and Derek, ladies' man even then at age five, was the knight in shining armor who had to slay me and rescue her from my evil clutches.
Then, there was Emily, Derek's next door neighbor for who knows how long. For some reason, even though the three of us were all friends and I was nicer to her, she seemed to prefer Derek. Later on, when we were in middle school, I sort of understood why, but I resented it.
Derek had always been a ladies' man. In first grade, he purposely failed so he could "be with Sam and Emily my two best friends", but I know the real reason. Jenny Barton, the prettiest girl in my kindergarten class and him were "going out" and he wanted to be in class with her. Two months into our first grade year, Jenny Barton moved to Ireland, and we never heard from her again.
But, in high school, when Casey McDonald moved to our school and Derek didn't go after her, I was shocked. Floored even. Within seconds of meeting her, I figured it would only be a matter of time until he jumped her, but it never happened. Then I found out that they were step-siblings. However, after awhile, I began to see things such as how sexually charged their fights were, so I was completely astonished when I got the girl.
What Derek wants, Derek gets, right? It seemed though, in this case, that that statement wasn't always true.
Yet, as time went on, I realized how naïve I was being. Even when I "got the girl", Derek won, because don't you see? Derek always wins. I don't know how he does it, but he does.
Even when I was dating her, even when everyone was dating her, Derek still took priority over us. And when I was no longer the boyfriend, I finally began to understand why.
Because I didn't get the girl, not really. Neither did Max, or Truman, or Scott, or any of the other guys Casey dated. No, Derek got her every single time, and still has her today.
Sometimes I look back and wonder why I even tried. What Derek wants, Derek gets. He always wins. I don't understand why I didn't see that then and I see that now, but you know something? Standing here at their wedding, I realize that maybe Derek didn't get the girl, not this time. Because even though Derek had her at the beginning, I have her now, and I know I will always have her.
So hey, maybe what Derek wants, Derek gets. But Derek doesn't get everything because I got Emily.
A/N: I'm baaack! Haha, I know you've missed me. Yes, no? Probably not. Oh well. Anyway, this is my first completed Life with Derek fic. Tell me what you think in a review!
