Ya know-- Arvid was a darn nice guy. A little stubborn and oversensitive at times, but nonetheless, a darn nice guy. I think he needs a story--
***
Arvid limped through the door.
"Arvid? Arvid is that you?"
He sighed and pulled off his hat. "Yes mama."
Mrs [uhhhh, whats his last name?] Schneider came through the door, still in her dress and apron. She gazed at her son.
"What happened? It's almost one in the morning."
"Uh, nothing...little argument with Thomas." Uh-huh, sure. Anything but little.
"Oh. I'm sure it will blow over." Mrs. Schneider gave Arvid a kiss on the cheek. "Get some rest dear." She turned and headed for her room.
"Night mama. I--I love you." She turned and looked back. Arvid sounded like a little child again--not wanting her to leave him.
"I love you too. With my whole heart." Mrs. Schneider took one last look at her son, and turned away, smiling softly.
Arvid stood there, replaying the scene over and over in his mind.
He wanted to remember her just like that.
***
Arvid packed up all his clothes. He wrote a note to his mother:
Mama-
This was something I had to do. I couldnt just stand by and let it happen. My life is unbearable. Please understand. Please forgive me. And always remember that I love you--with my whole heart.
Arvid
and one to Peter-
Peter-
Thank you for being there for me. I'll never forget it. Don't think you caused this. It wasn't you. It was everything in my life, closing in on me. You look like a Nazi--but underneath that uniform, it's just you. The sensible, funny best friend I ever had.
Swing heil, until we meet again-
Arvid
Arvid pulled out a record.
"Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)" he murmured. "A classic."
He took the record and grabbed 3 pictures off of his desk. One of him and the hepcats (Emil, Thomas, Otto, Peter and himself) in better times, one of his parents, and one of Helga.
***
Arvid shattered the record, and sliced a rough edge into his wrists. He was startled at the amount of deep red blood that oozed out on cue.
"This is it," He thought, "I'm gonna die." Arvid sat down in the tub, and began to pray.
"God--You have to forgive me. I never wanted it this way. But how can I stand by and let them murder all those people?! Just because I'm not killing doesn't mean I'm not a part of it. By letting them continue to control us, I'm helping Hitler. Can't you see that God!? I can't do it! I won't! Please God--Please..." Arvid felt his breath get short, and the world around him became fuzzy.
"Please forgive me." He whispered. The last thing he saw, was the picture of his friends, the people who mattered more than anything to him. Then Arvid closed his eyes, and let God take over.....
