There's no such thing as an accident in Winchester-world. Sam and Dean have a little car trouble in a desert.
Dean said – Jim Carrey, right?
Simultaneously Sam said – Lemony Snickett.
Which tells you something, right there, about those Winchester brothers.
It started when the Impala blew a gasket and Dean blew a fuse cursing, out in the middle of the Nevada desert. Nothing but sand and rocks as far as the eye could see.
Both got sunburn, necks redder'n any redneck, failing to fix her up. So they started walking.
Tricky-Coyote struck with a mirage that sent Sam one way, Dean the other - off the edge of that precipice.
Concussion, broken collarbone.
So yeah, a series of unfortunate events.
