It was with some difficulty that Clara Oswald was able to pursuade the Doctor not to just touch his index finger to the forehead of the young boy lying on the bed in the makeshift hospital tent and send him instantly to sleep. "He wants a bedtime story, Doctor," she told him. "Properly!" The Time Lord started to protest, but quickly realised the futility of arguing with his companion now, on this matter.

"Very well," he said with a sigh, picking up one of the children's storybooks stacked nearby. "Standard, human, adult-to-child, time-consuming storytelling it is."

Smiling, Clara turned and exited the tent as she continued her rounds of the rest of the camp. Emergency services were swamped following the disaster, barely able to cope with the sheer number of injured and homeless, so she and the Doctor had offered their assistance, which was readily accepted by the exhausted authorities. Now she was making sure everyone in the tents was reasonably comfortable before turning in for the night. She looked into the distance at the devastated buildings of the city, reduced to so much rubble by the volcanic eruption and earthquake which had ripped across the continent mere days ago. It would be a while before it was all rebuilt, and life was normal again. Clara gave a sad sigh as she considered that for many, life never would be the way it was before this. Some would never regain their full health...or the friends and loved ones they had lost in the cataclysm.

When the time came for them to be on their way, and the Doctor was opening the doors of the TARDIS, Clara stood and looked out at the land they were leaving. "I'm glad we helped, Doctor," she said. "I'm glad we were able to make just a small difference. But..." She turned around and looked forlornly at the Doctor, his eyebrows fierce as always, yet his eyes themselves full of understanding. The question on Clara's mind did not need to be spoken aloud; they both knew what it was...what had to happen yet, which they could not change. After a few seconds, Clara shrugged her shoulders, and quietly stepped into the TARDIS, the Doctor closing the door behind them both.

The TARDIS faded into the time vortex, leaving the planet Mondas behind to live out the rest of its' days.
