Sometimes I wonder if all this talk of sky pirating is nonsense. Maybe it's time that I grew up, stopped playing these silly games and started taking on some jobs from Migelo or someone. Kytes has already done a few for him. Penelo's been doin' it for years.
But then I think about the other Lowtown kids. They still dream of the sky, even them what's never seen it. And I look at Vaan who's brave enough to steal from imperials. And he snuck into the palace that time and stole something. They sent the whole imperial army after him. That's what it looked like.
He reckons he got sent to Nalbina for that, but I ain't sure. There's people what said they seen him being taken away by the guards. Penelo said she seen him go and said it was Nalbina. And she got that handkerchief off that real live sky pirate, whatever his name was.
No one ever comes out of Nalbina and I don't reckon Vaan's gonna be the first to escape from an imperial dungeon fortress thing. Kytes said he once got trapped in the sewers by a malboro. They ain't exactly smart and the imperials've got some dirty tricks, so I don't reckon he coulda been to Nalbina.
Mind you, there was that scruffy man 'round here that time after he came back. Seemed real familiar, but I dunno why. Weren't one of the bums I ever seen laying around down here. Anyway he could've escaped from some dungeon, I s'pose. Looked like he'd been in a dungeon. Smelled like he'd been in a dungeon too. Big beard, he had. Like a wolf.
But that sky pirate Vaan went off with… he hadn't never been in no dungeon. He were all clean and smart, nice shirt and waistcoat… real proper sky pirate, he looked. I wanna be like him when I grow up.
So maybe I'm all right. Maybe I have got some growin' up to do, but that don't mean I have to give up on my dreams. Maybe I need to grow up to make them real. And besides, what would the kids do without their fearless leader?
