This is my first fanfic so please be nice :-)

Magnus jabbed at the glass in the general direction of the ring. "That one. That's nice."

Clary rolled her eyes. "There is no way Alec would wear that."

They were standing outside a jewelry shop in Manhattan and Magnus had asked Clary to help him pick out a ring for Alec. He was going to propose a week from now at her Mom and Luke's' wedding anniversary party.

"I need to look at it and think 'Alec'." Magnus muttered thoughtfully, his eyes scanning the display of silver rings, his gaze mostly falling on the ones with 3 or 4 stones Clary really couldn't imagine Alec even dreaming of wearing.

"I don't think you can look at a ring and think Alec, Magnus." Clary sighed. They had been standing out here for 20 minutes in the freezing cold, and by now Clary was ready to just buy the cheapest one and go.

"Lets go inside and we can ask about them." Magnus stalked inside with Clary just behind him.

In the space of 20 seconds a girl with sparkly eyes and a sales-girl smile. "Can I help you?"

"Yes, I'm looking a silver ring?" Magnus asked.

"An engagement ring." Clary supplied helpfully.

"Certainly, follow me." Clary could actually hear the strain in her too-bright voice.

She unlocked a drawer behind the counter and looked at them. "Would you like a stone or plain?"

"NO stone." Clary said at the exact same time as Magnus said, "Stones, please!"

"This isn't for you, Magnus. Alec isn't the decorative, sparkly type." Clary gave him an annoyed glance.

"Fine then. No stones." He shot Clary a look as the girl brought out a tray of about 20 different silver rings.

Clary pointed at a ring with nothing on it. "See? Alecs style."

Magnus shook his head. "Definitely way to boring." Clary blew air through her teeth. "You know what? Just pick one and then get out."

Magnus bit his lip. "I like this one." He was pointing at a ring with two tiny diamonds set into the ring.

Clary stepped forward. "Actually, that one is a good choice."

"Loving the surprise in your voice, biscuit." Magnus gave her an angry look and turned back to the girl. "That one."
