Olivia sighed, walking into the apartment that changed it's mood so frequently. It had been lonely when she'd first moved in, then full when Alex joined her. Then it had been positively painful when Alex had entered witness protection and, even when she'd come back, refused to restart their relationship. Then it had felt heavenly and alive when Alex had agreed to move back in.
Now it was lonely again. Alex had abandoned her, again. Of course, the reason was noble enough. Helping rape victims was what they were passionate about. But Olivia couldn't do it without Alex. She felt selfish, but she'd rather have Alex curled up in her lap, watching a romantic comedy while snacking on popcorn and cola, than in the Congo.
Still, she couldn't deny that she was proud of her Alex. There were countless dangers, and Alex was going there anyway.
The pride was offset by fear, however. Olivia had managed to last a week without Alex before driving herself crazy with worry. She spent every minute thinking about her. Was Alex alright? Was she getting attacked, or about to be attacked? Was she afraid?
Did she miss Olivia as much as Olivia missed her?
Swallowing nervously, Olivia grabbed a can of V8 and sat on the sofa, restlessly tapping her foot. Alex had to be okay. Her Alex had been through so much; surely something else wasn't about to happen.
She idly flipped through her mail. Magazine, bill, another bill... A letter from Alex!
She smiled and slowly opened the envelope before unfolding the letter.
Dear Liv,
I don't have a lot of time to write, but I figured I should write you so you don't drive yourself crazy. I'm okay; busy and tired, but everything's fine. I'm worried about you and I miss you, though. I can't wait to see you again and kiss you.
I love you, Olivia!
-Alex
Olivia's heart pounded happily as she read through the letter again, and again. It was reassuring and comforting.
Smiling softly, she grabbed a piece of paper and began to write back.
