So Naruto was an idiot. Sasuke was right if he couldn't even reach over and grab his hand. Naruto eyed said hand lying next to Sasuke's thigh on the seat longingly. They were on an escort mission, and their client had demanded they take the train (and Tsunade had insisted that they were Very Important and to Not Upset them, after which she'd given Naruto a meaningful look). And then Kakashi had thought it would be a good idea to make Sasuke and Naruto sit next to each other. At the end of the wagon ("To keep our backs covered"). Naruto had decided that he definitely did not like the wink Kakashi had given Sasuke as he had walked away.
He glanced at Sasuke's hand before leaning his elbow on the armrest, resting his chin in his palm and sighing loudly. He opened his mouth to speak but he was already being interrupted.
"Don't start complaining about how bored you are."
Naruto shot him a quick glare, gritting his teeth.
"I wasn't going to."
"Right," Sasuke answered, glancing in his direction with that half smirk that might, sometimes makes his heart skip a beat. Naruto mumbled a vague shut up, Sasuke before taking his hand, entwining their fingers and looking away quickly, face burning. He expected Sasuke to pull away, but he didn't. He risked a look, and Sasuke was looking out the window, one of those rare soft smiles on his lips. Naruto grinned and turned back around to stare dreamily into empty space.
"Hey, Sasuke-kun -- "
He jumped when Sakura suddenly appeared next to them and jerked his hand away from Sasuke's, but the other only tightened his fingers. He gaped at him, surprised, his eyes saying what are you doing you bastard what if she sees I thought you didn't want her to know what the hell are you DOING and was about to say something when Sakura started to splutter, went bright red, and stormed off. Whether it was of rage or embarassement, he didn't know. He heard her shriek at Kakashi to shut up right this instant, and then stopped paying attention as he moved to kiss Sasuke quickly and lightly on the lips.
They didn't let go of each other's hands for the rest of the trip.
