A/N: How 'Know Thine Enemy' should have ended. Starts right when Lynley and Havers are trying to look at the tapes, when he gives her that look.
Now that they've pulled the plug out of the TV series, the least they could've done was give us our ending.
How it should have ended
"Happy birthday to you…"
The words echoed in Barbara's mind as they switched the TV off. She shuddered.
"I know we have to look at them sometime… But…"
Lynley glanced over at her. He sent her a saddened smile.
"Not now," he said.
Barbara sighed and eyed down. The mere thought that Tania had almost succeeded in winning her over… The thought was unbearable. Barbara knew she was bright enough, worthy of being a Detective Sergeant. She had proven herself so many times before. Why did her instincts fail on her now, especially now that the Super Intendent had asked her for her opinion? It seemed hardly fair. She could feel Lynley's eyes burning her cheek. At least he had been polite and given in to her request not to "I told you so." She bit her lip.
"Barbara…"
She looked at him. His look confused her. Was it pity? That must be it, he felt pity for her. She had fallen right into Tania's deathtrap. She'd even allowed herself to believe that the woman befriended her. What a fool she was.
"I'm sorry."
Yeah. There you go, pity. Endless pity. Quite the charmer. Oh it's just like him. Taking the blame. He's sorry? Has he ever even looked at the person sitting next to him? Hello?
"I'm sorry… For being so stubborn. I know very well of what you're capable of, Barbara."
Barbara laughed sarcastically.
"Well yeah I've really proven that, haven't I?"
He smiled and continued to look at her. She looked at him and now started to feel very awkward. She blushed and looked away, then looked up at him again. She tried to speak but fell silent as he leant toward her. She closed her eyes as he kissed her and when his lips touched hers, everything seemed to fall into place. Her whole life, her work, her entire being, it all came down to this. She felt shocked and relieved at the realization. As he pulled away from her again, years of tension fell off her shoulders and she felt immensely tired. She opened her eyes. He looked at her in a way that he had never looked at her before. He observed every inch of this Barbara Havers, this new woman she had become. With a dreamy look she tried to recall what had just happened.
"I'm sorry," he whispered and kissed her cheek and then her neck. She gasped. She saw her arms wrap themselves around his back. He stopped kissing her and leaned back a little. She let out a deep sigh and rested her head against his shoulder. Then she started to weep. Ashamed of this, she covered her eyes with her hands but he took them away and kissed her eyes. She looked at him and laughed.
"Look what you've done, I'm a mess now!"
He grinned. She dried her tears.
"Well, that was unexpected." Said she.
"Unexpected… And… Nice?" he asked.
She answered him with a smile and he smiled back.
THE END.
