Preface: Gladiator of Glasgow.

Jonathan McGregor lives in San Francisco. He ranks second in the 9B class under German-born Robert Jürgen, attending the prestigious George Washington International High School located near the Presidio, where the multi-faceted studentbody is everything except American. His own Scottish upbringing being a prime example; or those of his friends who are chiefly of Asian or European (or Eurasian) origin. Russian, Japanese, Irish, French – half-this, half-that but not American unless by citizenship. Regardless of purging their native accents or (for some) after years of living as Californians, fifty-percent of his peers continue rebuking their 'American-ness'.

Johnny doesn't care either way.

He plays for the boys' varsity soccer team as their revered leftfielder – dubbed the "Gladiator of Glasgow" as he takes no prisoners – and, in the off-season, pursues tennis or golf leisurely. Rarely in the Dean's good graces or avoiding trouble, Johnny is oftentimes described as reckless, crass and (more commonly) a hothead. The latter a not-so-subtle gesture toward his red hair and short fused temper.

Somehow, despite his obvious flaws, there is a casual charm about him that members of the opposite sex notice. Jock status, fiery emotions and (maintained) foreign accent notwithstanding, Johnny's musical ability might contribute to the satisfying number of female-callers. Still, up until recently, he didn't take an active interest in dating and making out.

Girls have cooties.

But then … she happened.
