Jack be Nimble, Jack be Quick

Clarissa was not impressed. The new recruit she was meant to be mentoring had not turned up. It was his first shift and he was already 45 minutes late. This did not bode well and Clarissa was already sharpening her most sarcastic comments ready for when he arrived.

Almost on cue the door to the lab swung open and a tall, muscular man stumbled through the door.

"You're late," Clarissa said frowning

"No, I'm Jack," he grinned and for the first time she got a good look at him.

His face was covered with cuts and bruises. There was a nasty laceration above his left eyebrow which was being held together with some steri-strips. Bruising was forming around one of his eyes and from what Clarissa could make out, it was going to turn into one hell of a black eye. He held out his hand for her to shake, and as she took it she noticed some bruising on his knuckles.

"Sorry I'm late," his apology didn't sound all that genuine to her

"Big night was it?" Clarissa said eyeing him warily

"Something like that," a smiled played across Jack's lips

"Don't let it happen again," she said sternly

"No Ma'am," he gave her a mock salute and she could help but crack a smile

"I can tell you're going to be a pain-in-the-arse," she said as she showed him around the lab

"Takes one to know one!" he said cheekily and Clarissa sighed.

Why could she mentor someone who was quieter? Still if he was going to make with the sarcastic comments, Clarissa could always give as good as she got. She'd soon have Jack Hodgson back in line.
