"Now, in the Euphoria Elixir, what is the purpose of the wormwood?" Professor Slughorn asked his students as he mixed the ingredients into a simmering brew.

Despite the professor's cheerful attitude, the potions class was having trouble paying attention. An overnight blizzard caused the underground classroom was more frigid than usual. Most of the students were spending their time trying to keep warm instead of paying attention to the lesson.

"Anyone? Snape, how about you?"

Professor Slughorn turned his attention to one of his best students, a skinny teenager wearing a large heavy overcoat. His oily black hair hid his dark eyes, giving more attention to his long pointed nose. The boy shifted nervously in his seat, for it was unusual for Severus Snape to not pay attention in his favorite class. But today he was focusing on a shivering red head two rows in front of him.

"Uh…um…" Severus muttered, trying to remember the question. "Well, wormwood helps make most potions more powerful."

"Correct, yes," Slughorn replied with a nod, knowing he wasn't going to get a more detailed answer from the inattentive class.

He continued, "Alright, to prepare for your O.W.L.'s today we're going to have a little competition. Whichever pair can brew the best healing potion will be awarded this…" he held up a small vial filled with golden liquid, "… a day's worth of Felix Felicis! Good luck!"

The class immediately broke from their haze and hurried to find their friends. Slughorn held this competition every year, so it wasn't a surprise to anyone. Still, the chance to have a day of luck was a big reward that everyone was going to work hard for.

Severus stayed in his seat and opened up his textbook, knowing he'll be stuck with whoever's left.

"Hey, Sev?" asked a small voice above him.

Severus quickly looked up to find the girl he'd been watching earlier, Lily Evans. Her dark red hair was pulled up in a ponytail and her bright green eyes shined warmly as she stared down at him.

"Mary's still in the hospital wing, so I was wondering if I could work with you?" she asked cautiously.

Severus couldn't believe his luck. Ever since the school year started he'd been trying to get Lily's attention, and here she was. Maybe the Felix Felicis wasn't necessary.

"Uh… yeah, sure," he stammered.

"Great. I'll go get the ingredients," Lily said, rubbing her arms to keep warm.

"You look freezing," Severus commented without thinking, "Do you want a coat or something?"

"I guess I'm a bit chilly," she said, a little surprised.

Snape took off his overcoat and handed it to her, "Here. It's really warm."

Lily took it, not caring about the size or its appearance. "Thanks, Sev," she said with a smile as she put it on.

With the oversized coat on, she went to get the ingredients, ignoring the many odd looks from her classmates.

Severus returned to his textbook, finding instructions he had already edited earlier that year. He decided to ignore the extra notes, because he didn't need to win the competition.

Maybe he already had enough luck.
