Heavy drops of cold autumn rain fell in droves from the overcast night sky, dropping like bombs on the village and forest alike. Any light the approaching dawn might have offered to the sleeping town dampened down and blocked out by the sullen storm clouds that brooded overhead. Tonight these rain washed streets and grass covered pathways were deserted, everyone in their right mind taking shelter inside with those they loved. Even the creatures of the forest had hidden themselves away from the cruel weather. No sane person would have dared to brave the deluge…

This being the case it was not, perhaps, very surprising to find this single figure standing in silence before the polished memorial stone as the rain pounded down around him. Kakashi Hatake stood before the stone, staring at where he knew those names to be, even if darkness and rain hid them from him. Bitter memories danced before his eyes as painful tears slipped unnoticed into the night. This solitude was right. His guilt did not deserve company.

Inconsequential thoughts rose and fell unbidden inside his tortured brain. Faces of people he used to know, people he'd failed. Places that used to be so dear to him, long abandoned to the ravages of time. Hours whisked by like seconds, like years, to the masked man.

Gradually a sullen light crept through the trees, growing with each passing minute. But he didn't move. After all, who would be assigned a mission on a day like this, save if it was a matter of gravest importance. No…no-one would come looking for him. He could afford to stay here for a little longer at least…A bitter smile graced his masked lips as his mind wandered for a second away from the people he mourned, to the people he knew now. None of them would ever believe that this could be the reason behind his famous lateness. The smile dropped.

Someone had once told Kakashi that he was good at seeing the truth, but sometimes, Kakashi wished more than anything to see the lies everyone else stood convinced of.
