Yeah, Matt's birthday isn't until February 1st, but I probably won't have internet then. Happy early birthday, o goggled gamer.
"Hey, Matt?"
"Yeah?"
Mello picked uncomfortably at his white robe. "I have a theory."
"About what?"
"How you ended up...here."
"In heaven? Well, go on, 'cause the reason escapes me." He set down the DS he was fiddling with and turned expectantly.
"No, I mean how you ended up dead. I- I think it had to do with your birthday last year."
"My... birthday?"
"Yeah. Remember, we actually baked a cake and everything."
Matt laughed. "It was more of a giant chunk of chocolate with candles embedded in it, but keep going."
The man beside him glared and shoved a tuft of cloud in his friend's face. "Anyway, we had a cake, and you made a wish, didn't you?"
"Uh, sure."
Mello sighed sadly. "That's where it all went wrong."
"What do you mean, Mel?" he asked curiously, scooting closer.
"I mean," he said dramatically, "that I knew what you wished for."
Matt was silent for a moment before inquiring softly, "So what did I wish for?"
"To live to your next birthday!" the blonde cried. "And because I knew, it didn't come true, and you died about five days before!"
"What makes you think that I wished for that?"
"All because of me," he despaired. "Because we were involved with that dangerous Kira crap!"
Matt smiled gently and wrapped an arm around his shoulder. "I think you're just trying to find an excuse to blame yourself. I definitely didn't wish for that."
He leaned closer and whispered, "And just for the record, my wish has already been granted."
