The Sculpture
Jane laid down her chisel and looked at her sculpture. she stud there and smirked.
Removing her goggles went and took a drink from her desk. She calmly walked back over to her latest work. She started running her hand over the edges lightly.
"Janey, you ok?" she jumped as he spoke. "...yes, just got caught up in my work." she looked to see Trent standing at her doorway. She walked over to him and gave him a hug.
"Just had to get this out of my system before the big day." She gave a half smile to him. "So, do you think they will like it?" she said calmly. "with out a doubt" Trent said hugging his sister.
They both stood there for a while just holding each other. Then Jane went back to work on her sculpture. "Just two more days, I hate deadlines!" she thought to herself.
Her muse guiding each strike of her hammer as she worked. The hour's flew by as she worked stopping every so often for a break. She poured herself into her work.
She could hear Sick Sad World on in the background mixed with snide remarks in a familiar deadpan voice commenting every now and then on the subject. Hour's later she woke with her chisel still in hand. She stood up for a bit and stretched her sore body.
She saw a box of pizza with a note from Trent on it. "Janey, you were asleep and didn't want to wake you" The note stated "P.S. the movers for your sculpture will be there at 10:15."
She looked at her clock and it was around 8:10. "OH CRAP!" and rushed to get changed. After a shower and change she stopped to see if there were to be any last details she had missed. Slowly going thru each contour of the sculpture for any imperfections she herd a knock on the door.
She ran down the stairs to let the movers in. They were fast and extra careful with it as they could see the look of worry in her eyes when they were moving it. "We will see you there at 1:30 or so take care!" as the truck left she hurried in to check how she looked.
"Crap! I knew I was cutting it close" she told herself As she hurried off to the reception.
She never liked going to these things and hated having to dress up! Near the ending of the reception her sculpture was reviled and got quite the reaction. Many people came up and complemented her on her work.
She went up after the crowds died down and touched it lightly.
"Hay, you sure your ok with leaving this Janey?" "Yes Trent, It is my best work, it needs to be seen..." she trailed off tears in her eyes as she stroked it.
The slowly walked away holding each other. As they walked a little girl stopped to ask Jane if she was ok. "I lost something..." Jane just above a whisper said to the little girl. "She has it..." pointing back to the sculpture.
It was a statue of Daria perfect in every detail down to her hair made out of granite. It was on top of her tombstone : "Here lies Daria Morgandorffer, Daughter, Deviant, and Drunk driving victim. A freaking friend to the end!"
