Unlike my usual stories, I am not conforming to the format of Doctor Who in any era. I was just moved to write this story after someone at karaoke said that I should take my current "theme song" and write something around it with the same message I give there.
This uses the UNIT continuity that was bollixed by Mawdryn Undead.
AN: According to several polls, over 80% of Americans had friendships end because of the election. I find that mind-numbingly depressing. Luckily, I found a video of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the meeting of Benny and Bjorn of ABBA, where Agnetha and Anni-Frid sang to them - thus ending the bitterness among them after 35 years. Let us remember why they were our friends in the first place.
The Way Old Friends Do
Live, Wembley Stadium, 10 November 1979.
The Doctor looked up at Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Major Beresford, Captain Yates, Sergeant Benton, Lieutenant Sullivan, and the rest of the UNIT men in the box, snorted amusedly, and then sat back into his chair. The others continued standing, whooping their cheers as best they could to encourage another encore from Britain's most popular group since The Beatles – ABBA.
After several moments, he saw the four members come from his stage left. They walked to the center of the stage – and was that an accordion? The UNIT personnel sat down and quieted themselves as Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Bjorn, and Benny stood at the center of the stage. A children's choir had assembled on the left in the interim while the rest of performers were off to the right. After a few moments, the song began with, yes, an accordion!
You and I can share the silence;
Finding comfort together
The way old friends do.
And after fights and words of violence,
We make up with each other
The way old friends do.
Times of joy, and times of sorrow:
We will always see it through.
Oh, I don't care what comes tomorrow
We can face it together
The way old friends do.
You and I can share the silence;
Finding comfort together
The way old friends do.
And after fights and words of violence
We make up with each other
The way old friends do.
Times of joy and times of sorrow:
We will always see it through.
Oh, I don't care what comes tomorrow;
We can face it together
The way old friends do.
We can face it together
The way old friends do.
The Doctor rocketed to his feet in applause along with the rest of the UNIT members. As he applauded, he looked at them and snickered at himself. Here he was, completely devoted to non-violence whenever possible, standing with some of his closest friends in the entire cosmos: military men and women who were trained to kill. He kept applauding as the truth of the song and the irony of his situation hit him: these were many of his old friends, no matter what they might do that annoyed him, or even angered him. They all faced everything from the Master to giant maggots to time-serving bureaucrats together, with complete trust in each other, the way old friends do.
AN: you can find a clip of the performance on YouTube.
