Sirius/James slash. Read and Review. Don't own.
It was funny they'd become friends at all.
The Blacks and the Potters weren't exactly known for getting along, in the first place. And they were just so different. James was small; while Sirius was taller than most of the boys in their year. Sirius laughed; James didn't.
When they became friends, people seemed to forget that sort of thing. James seemed taller when he was with Sirius, and he learned to laugh.
Sirius always loved doing things that were unexpected. He could look at the two of them, marvel at how ridiculous it was, and laugh.
It was odd that they'd stayed friends at all.
People thought they were the same; but really, Sirius sometimes thought that they were polar opposites. James had a family; Sirius didn't. James knew how to love someone; while Sirius had never learned. He supposed it was the sort of thing that could have come between them, but it never did.
Sirius wasn't quite sure when their tentative, budding friendship had cemented itself into the forever kind, but he was glad it did.
Now he could talk around James; really talk, about everything. There weren't any boundaries between the two of them because Sirius was almost James and James was almost Sirius and when you're two halves of one person shouldn't you be as close as possible?
Sirius's family hated it, but by that point, he was happy to make them angry. He slipped closer to James, and laughed.
Maybe it wasn't so odd they'd become more-than-friends.
Lily Evans was beautiful; small and perfect. But really, Sirius was all he'd ever known. Loud, brave, take-no-prisoners Sirius. And Sirius could be beautiful, too, James discovered. Falling asleep in the common room with his mouth half open and the firelight making his face glow and his head resting on James' shoulder. Hair floating around his face as they raced through the corridors together.
He didn't expect Sirius to kiss him. They were studying, and nothing seemed different, but he looked up, and Sirius leaned over and kissed him.
He kissed Sirius back before he knew what he was doing, and it took a moment to even sink in: Sirius Black was kissing him. Sirius, best friend, always there Sirius. He shoved him away.
He yelled at Sirius and he didn't think he'd ever felt so awful as he did when Sirius looked up at him after that looking like he was going to cry. Sirius said he knew it was stupid and he was sorry, so sorry, but that's how he felt; he loved James so much and he was too cowardly to say anything but could they still be friends.
And by that time, yelling and shouting and pleading had brought them closer and James could see the tears on Sirius's eyelashes and the wetness on his lips and it didn't feel wrong at all when he grabbed the back of Sirius's head and kissed him, hard. And they didn't hold back, this time, pressing into each other, arms and legs tangling as they fell in a sweaty mess onto the bed. Sirius looked down on James and they kissed quickly, Sirius's hand in James's hair and James holding on tight, and when they pulled away they were smiling.
James shook his head at the absurdity of it and laughed.
