Hello Oban Star Racer fans! I just saw the first episode and I can't wait to write something for it so here it is! I wrote this using the flashback in episode 2. It's not that hard to figure out who the pilot in the crash was in my opinion, but if you don't know, read to find out.

I Promise Mom

By Netbug009

What… What happened?

Why here?

Why now?

…Why her?

I didn't cry for a long time; instead, my body seemed to come to a stop. I was thinking about nothing, and everything, at the same time.

I slid off my father's shoulders and ran onto the track. Faint cries calling for me to come back we're almost inaudible through the commotion of the crowd. I didn't stop running, my only focus being on the fallen ship and, more importantly, the diver within.

It was only a moment later I realized I couldn't get to her. The ship has been reduced to a hunk to metal, glass, and chrome that glowed an orange red. Smoke that could be seen for miles rose from the inferno.

Even with all that was happening around me, I was focus on one aspect of it all; A charred hand could be seen sticking out of the racer's cockpit. That's when I knew she was gone.

But after all that, seeing how the other driver crashed too, you still one by a good five inches. If only you could have seen them announce the new world champion!

After it had all passed, I waited for you do come home. My shoes didn't come off until bedtime, for I would sit and wait for you on the porch. I was so young; I didn't understand and Dad didn't seem to know what to say. I can't blame him. It had happened so fast, after all.

I won't let what happened make me afraid of being like you, being a great pilot. That's a promise.

A promise, Mom, that I hope one day will make you proud.
