Without A Doubt
He watched her. She was beautiful and compassionate. She was everything he'd been looking for and never found. He knew he'd never have a chance. They were friends and colleagues but that was as close as they would ever get.
She noticed him watching her and shot him a quick smile. He returned it half-heartedly and tried to turn his mind back to his work. But she was there too. She was always on his mind, lurking around every corner. She had no idea though. She never saw what lurked in his eyes. She couldn't feel the waves of love rolling off him in her direction. He was too good at hiding what he didn't want to be seen. Even his partner couldn't see it and he saw everything. Yes, he was a master concealer.
There were times that he wondered though. He wondered if she'd figured out his secret. The night on the roof came to mind. It was so many years ago, but she'd been the one to check on him, to listen when he needed to talk. But then things had been the norm after that brief moment. There were other things, a smile here, a touch there, that made him wonder if she knew. But she never moved beyond those things.
He pulled his mind back to work. He was crazy about her, but there was nothing he could do about it.
