The darkness dissipated like a curtain being pulled away from a window to reveal the sunrise. A new day, a new beginning. The white light that surrounded him was so intense that it seemed to seep into every one of his cells. It was too bright to open his eyes but he could feel the light inside of him it seemed to be healing him from the inside out. The feeling was an ecstasy he hadn't even known existed. He had no way of knowing how much time had actually passed; only that it was a pleasant experience. But it was the breath before the plunge; the calm before the storm.
As quickly as the light had rescued him from the darkness it faded. He could feel the ground beneath him, it was uneven and hard. Suddenly he was aware of his body as he hadn't been when the darkness had ruled him. It was like waking up, only he wasn't sure he wanted to be awake. The darkness had been comforting and safe in a way the new world around him was not. He could sense the death and disease on the wind. There was an almost tangible sense of struggle and pain here that had not existed in the darkness. He would never have felt it had he not felt its absence.
Slowly gaining the ability to move he blinked his eyes open. The view of a starlit sky greeted his waking eyes. He couldn't remember where he was. But this sky was so like that of his childhood. He could remember staring at such a similar sky on nights when he lay out behind the manor. Could he still be a child? Had all the intermittent time been a dream?
He felt his arms and hands pushing him up into a sitting position and then he was on his feet, it was almost as if they had acted on their own accord. As he turned he saw the lake. All the memories flooded back to him. He swung around searching and found what he was looking for.
Less than fifteen feet away lay the girl who had saved him. He needed no evidence to know what happened. He had answered her call. He was back because of her, and she was all he wanted for as long as he had before the darkness reclaimed him. He walked toward her body; she was lying as though she had been knocked to the ground or tackled. Fear crept into the corners of his mind as he wondered if perhaps she was hurt or dead herself. He couldn't quite make out any movement in her scraped and bloody body.
Afraid to have come so far back and have his only wish and dream destroyed he called to her.
"Clary, open your eyes" he wanted her to see him. He wanted to watch her amazing green eyes again. But most importantly he wanted to know she was alive and responsive.
Her eyelashes trembled and then her eyes blinked open and stared up at him. They narrowed and then widened. He smiled down at her feeling the happiest he had ever felt. As he watched her pull herself from the ground all he could think was how grateful he was that a merciful angel had found him in the dark and put him on his feet again. He knew he wasn't going to waste what he had now that he had it all back.
