Corny and Maybelle had decided to throw a little celebration dance a few days after the show had become integrated. The dance floor was packed with teenagers, grooving with one another.
"Oh my God, Tracy look who showed up," Penny said, her mouth widening when she saw who had walked through the door.
Tracy stopped twisting and froze when she saw Amber Von Tussle standing on the edge of the dance floor. Her blonde hair was done in an up do and she was wearing a pale pink dress with matching heels. She could feel every eye in the room staring at her and she blushed. She was no longer the same girl that she was a few days ago.
"What are you doing here?" Tammy almost demanded of her.
"I was invited to attend just like everyone else. I wanted to come, I thought it would be fun," Amber replied, trying not to let her voice quiver.
"No one wants you here, you aren't even for integration," Shelley fumed, crossing her arms.
"Yes, I am! I never said I wasn't for it; that was my mother. People seem to confuse us a lot though. I have no problems with it; I even danced with Joey at the pageant," Amber explained.
It didn't seem like anyone wanted to listen to her. She was still the ice princess in their eyes. Penny had forgotten all about Amber and was busy dancing with Seaweed again. Tracy watched the scene unfold before her and she couldn't help but feel a little twinge of satisfaction as she watched Amber squirm.
"Hey, what's going on here?" Maybelle asked as she joined the group of kids who looked ready to attack Amber.
"We don't want her here!" Shelley said.
"She's allowed to be here, she was invited. She can dance the same as everyone else," Maybelle said.
"Well no one is going to dance with her then," Tammy sneered, grabbing her partner's hand as a slow song started to play.
Maybelle gave Amber a sympathetic smile and the blonde teen retreated to a row of empty chairs. She flopped down, not caring about her appearance any longer and dropped her head into her hands. At least she had tried. Corny had noticed her out of the corner of her eye and he swore he saw a tear roll down her cheek. It was true that he and the girl had had some words in the past, but he didn't think it was fair the way she was being treated.
"Hi, Amber," Corny smiled down at her, his hands shoved into his pockets.
"I don't need you making me feel worse," she sulked, not bothering to look up at him.
"I'm not here for that. I'm here to ask you to dance."
Amber raised her head and found Corny's hand offering itself in her face. She gave him a little smile and gently took his hand. He took her onto the dance floor, wrapping one arm around her waist so he could hold her close.
Earth
angel, earth angel
Will you be mine?
My darling dear, love you
all the time
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you
Her hand rested on his shoulder as they moved in time with the music. She knew her face was probably flushed because she suddenly felt very warm. Her heart was beating a little quicker now as they moved across the floor. Her skirts swooshed against his legs and he felt something stir gently inside of him.
"You look lovely tonight, Amber," he smiled at her, wanting to cheer her up for some reason.
"Thank you Corny, you look dapper as usual," she smiled, blushing even more as her fingers brushed against the lapels of his suit jacket.
It was Corny's turn to blush then. His hand took hold of hers and he gently spun her around, catching her close when she returned to his arms. Their bodies were pressed awfully close together and that's when the spark happened. It didn't seem wrong for their lips to press together. It didn't seem wrong for him to slide his tongue into her warm, sweet mouth. It didn't seem wrong for them to want to be together.
I fell for
you and I knew
The vision of your loveliness
I hope and
pray
I'll be the vision of your happiness
