Videos of the Past
Kristy didn't have any real memories of her father. After all, she'd just been a baby when he'd left for the Digital World – and never came back. But she had other things: stories from her mother and brother, photos scattered all about the house, and a few scarce videotapes Spender Damon hadn't been behind the camera for. Kristy would often complain to her mother about that, to which Sarah would reply: 'You know how the man always has to be behind the camera.' And then she'd laugh when Marcus would procure a video camera and chase his little sister around the house until Kristy was half laughing, half grumbling and had completely forgotten about being sad about the lack of videos.
And then she'd sit down and watch them. Sometimes with her brother and mother. Sometimes just one of them. Sometimes on her own. She'd watch the video of her parents' wedding, and how short her mother's hair had been back then, and how her father had used to keep a beard. She'd grimace at the look, hoping Marcus didn't get it into his head to have a beard as well. It just looked weird.
Then there were the videos with Marcus being born and growing up, causing far more trouble than she could ever hope to accomplish. Climbing on everything within reach, making messes she could still see traces of in the house (like that stain in their mother's wedding dress). There were precious few that had her father and herself, because she hadn't been born for long when he'd left, but there were a few. One with her father spinning her around like a helicopter and herself giggling. One with Marcus playing baseball with him while she cried in her basket. One with her father telling the both of them stories – and that was her favourite one, because she could lie down on the couch and listen to those stories all over again, and pretend she could remember her father telling them to her.
