Healing Steps

He'd been a jerk today, he knew that, it scared him. He didn't worry and he spent the whole day worrying about it. It was mean and inconsiderate it didn't matter that he was busy and time pressed, or that she needed to hold it together and the fact that she was breaking scared him. He'd snapped at her and she didn't deserve that.

He stood at her door step now hesitant in knocking he had never been hesitant before, he rapped his knuckles against it, she opened it with red rimmed eyes. She wore baggy sweatpants the same ones she had worn in his basement a week before, and a thin cotton T-shirt.

"Jet," she sighed and pushed open the door to let him in.

He exhaled a long breath.

"Have you eaten yet?" he asked.

"Not hungry" she mumbled.

She grabbed his hand and led him to her couch, "how 'bout a movie?"

"Kate," he turned sharply and gently grabbed her chin, the hurt still lingered in the back of her eyes, "stop pretending it didn't hurt. You didn't deserve it, your blaming yourself, and I'd rather you hit me on the head with that lamp over there than do that. I'm so-"

"-stop," she interrupted and grabbed his chin in turn. The worry and doubt were thick in the back of his eyes, "apology is a sign of weakness," she chuckled slightly, "I'm not gonna leave you, ever, I promise."

They dropped their hold on each other in a matter of seconds. Gibbs grasped Kate and pulled her onto his lap.

She didn't know how much saying that, promising that meant to him.

He didn't know how much apologizing, and being there meant to her.

They had both been hurt, they were both moving on.

Healing Steps.
