...
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
Sarah McLachlan - Possession
The warmth of a dying sun fled her cold ruby eyes as the last rays were cut cordless and left dangling on the dusty road. Her skin, hard as fluid stone, danced on the string remnants from another nightmare under the scorching ball of fire.
In this pale light the memories lingered like ebbing waves by the rocks; she couldn't see them, but she could hear the echoes chasing her to the edge of darkness and a fearless fall. And whenever morning came, it stole away her only escape.
The stillness of her lungs pained no one.
Her companions waited in sustained silence as the hem of her skirt twirled the idle canes by their new path. It was the very last dance of their fleeting lives and their dried bodies were left to show the way to the future.
Their drink was warm and ever willing, never enticing, as they aided peace on its crusade to conquer its enemies. Mindless masses, tasteless swigs, and forlorn hopes crashed at their shores drowning them in abundance. These waves nearly hid their most precious treasure under the deep, but its magic was too strong to be ignored; it was too strong for her to escape.
The pull turned her head as the priceless gem rode to her and weaved her into a web so tight, she could not move. He had captured her without a single touch. The noises in the back of her mind quieted. The world melted away as she held the warmth of the hazel in her rubies.
Where was he, when she danced with the others? Where was he when she woke a morning after another to the empty life without forgiveness? Where was he when her heart ached and trembled for the last time?
His careless smile and effortless bow begged her to notice. His kind words were meant to charm her, to bind her. His taste existed to tease to her.
Justly, she waited for him to crash and break by her shores, but the back of his coat taunted her as his hat drifted ever so slowly down on the bank.
Oh, how she wished she could feel the tickle of his whiskers as her mouth descended on his to steal his taste to the last drop.
Her fingers would forever compare the weight of the world to his fragile body in her embrace. Her touch would forever burn with the memory of his escape from pain and worry. And the unnatural stillness of her marble heart would solidify by the salty drop glistening by her nose.
She didn't want to see her own cowardice reflected back at her, so she whispered: "Just close your eyes dear. Nothing stands between us here, and I won't be denied, not this night."
...
Into this night I wander
It's morning that I dread
Another day of knowing of
The path I fear to tread
Oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
Nothing stands between us here
And I won't be denied
...
