A/N: I own nothing.
Elsa sighed as she read over documents that needed her signature. It had been almost a year since the great thaw and the consequences from her actions were still showing. This years harvest was half of what it was last year. She was starting to regret ending her trade deal with Weaseltown. "No," Elsa thought. She had to stop second guessing herself. What they attempted to do to her was unforgivable and it would only make her look bad if she started going back on her word. They would just have to find another trade partner. The next stack, possible suitors. Elsa looked down at the stack with a frown. She couldn't keep avoiding this. Especially not after her last conversation with her advisers. There were already rumors about her being the virgin Queen. "Hopefully those are the only rumors..." A knock on her door roused her from her thoughts.
"Come in," Elsa said while sliding the letters into a drawer.
"How's my favorite ice queen!?"
Elsa looked up from her desk at Kristoff mildly confused. It wasn't like him to act this awkwardly or come to her chambers. She quickly thought over what he might want and smiled. "It's nice to see you too Kristoff." He walked over and sat down nervously playing with his hands. "I know right! Seems like only yesterday we were talking at dinner."
Elsa chuckled. "That's because it was yesterday."
"Yep!"
She watched him patiently waiting for him to continue. "Right so uh. Not even sure how to really sa-" He cringed in pain. Elsa stood up and moved over to him. "Goodness are you okay?"
He nodded reassuringly. "Yeah sorry. Just some weird headache that comes and goes..."
She rested her hand on his forehead. "I don't think this is just a headache. You're burning up," Kristoff gently removed her hand. "Really I'm fine. I hardly ever get sick."
Elsa signed. " You were saying?"
"Oh right. What I was trying to say is.. Anna means the world to me. I can't image her not being in my life now. I-I just-"
Elsa stopped him by resting her hand over his with a loving smile. "You have my blessing Kristoff." He stared at her in disbelief. "Truly!?" Elsa nodded. Then yelped as he swooped her into a hug. When he finally put her down she quickly fixed her clothes mildly annoyed. "This has to be the happiest moment of my life!" He paused remembering something. "Oh I'm going to be taking Anna into the mountains, I have a special surprise for her."
Elsa was slightly hurt by that. One of her favorite parts of the day was having dinner with her sister. It started to set in that things were going to be different soon. "They'll be off in the mountains together more often. Just the two of them.."
The sound of Kristoff's voice snapped her from her thoughts. "We're probably going to spend the night out there, but hey don't worry she's in good hands."
Elsa tried her best to hide her pain and smiled at him. "I know she is. Now please have the doctors look over you before you go." He shrugged in a goofy way as he headed towards the door. "No promises."
Elsa shook her head as she watched him walk away. She moved back over to her desk and removed the letters from her drawer. As badly as this was making her stomach turn. It had to be done. The rest of her day was spent reading over documents and stamping her royal sigil. A soft knock came from her door before a woman walked in.
"I brought your dinner your majesty."
Elsa locked eyes with her maid and immediately felt embarrassed by how hard her heart was beating. Elsa knew something was wrong with her mind, but swore to keep it to herself. Things were so much easier when Gerda was still her head maid. With her retirement her granddaughter took over and brought new stress on the queens nerves constantly.
"Did you not want dinner?"
Elsa mentally slapped herself for staring so long and cleared her throat motioning towards her desk. "Yes Laina. Here is fine. Thank you."
Elsa tried to focus on her meal, but couldn't help looking over at Laina occasionally. She was out of uniform again. Which annoyed the Queen. She was wearing a grey dress and her light chest nut hair was pulled up into a bun.
Elsa picked up her utensils elegantly and started cutting her food. She glance over to the other women who was straightening out the curtains. "I see you chose to wear whatever you wanted today?" Laina paused before looking back at her with a smile. When Elsa's serious expression didn't change her maid sighed.
"I'm sorry your majesty, but that bonnet is so uncomfortable."
Elsa couldn't help smiling as she took a bite of her food. "I suppose I could look over the dress code and make some alterations. Until then. Be in uniform Laina. I will not ask you again."
Before the other woman could protest she changed the subject. "How's your grandmother?"
Laina's demeanor changed and she turned away. Remaining silent for a long time.
"Laina?"
"It's nothing serious your majesty. Just a cold that will soon pass."
Elsa nodded, but worry started setting in. One of her reports had a warning about a rise in citizens becoming ill. She would definitely have to look into this further. A soft hand rested on her shoulder. "I'm sure all will be fine." Liana reached down grabbing one of Elsa's dinner rolls and took a bite. Elsa watched her in shock, but blushed as the other woman winked at her "Now please enjoy your dinner or I will be tempted to enjoy it for you."
The Queen shook her head with a smirk. She loved the other woman's playfulness. No one else would be able to get away with such a thing, besides Anna maybe. "Anna." Elsa thought. "I hope she's okay."
"I'm sure she is."
Elsa froze staring at Liana. "Excuse me?"
Liana cleared her throat. "I'm just assuming you are thinking of your sister? I saw her not long ago and she seemed quite excited to leave today."
Elsa relaxed. "Yes. Kristoff is taking her into the mountains."
"He seems like a sweet man. Princess Anna is very lucky."
Elsa nodded slowly in agreement. Anna is lucky. Not only did she find love, but she had less responsibilities. No waking up early to sit in long meetings. No signing papers or making decisions that would leave lasting effects on the Kingdom. Elsa could feel jealous rising inside her, but she pushed it away. She knew this was her destiny since childhood. No since in being resentful about it now.
"If there is anything you need your grace I won't be too far away."
Elsa tried to think of an excuse to keep her longer, but couldn't think of anything. She folded a napkin over what was left of her meal and handed it to her. "I don't have much of an appetite tonight. That will be all."
Liana gave her a worried look before smiling. "Alright then. Sleep sweet."
Elsa's eyes scanned over her body as she watched her leave. When the door shut she sighed deeply. "I suppose I could try to get a bit of rest."
The sound sound of a booming voice made Elsa sit upright in her bed. It took her a few seconds to break from the haziness of sleep. The source of the voice was one of her guards Marius. She had protested in the past that she did not need guards, but the high council would have none of that. "Goodness Marius? Whats happened?"
He bowed. "I'm sorry to wake you like this your grace, but you are needed in the dungeons."
Elsa quickly got out of bed snapping her fingers and formed a presentable gown around her body. A part of her felt great pride at how impressed Marius looked, but there was no time to dwell on that. She mustered a commanding tone. "Lead the way."
As they made their way to the depths of the castle there was a strange eeriness in the air. Where was everyone? Elsa looked over to Marius who was visibly distraught. "What exactly is going on?"
Marius shook his head as he ran his fingers through his beard. "You have to see it with your own eyes your grace."
The sounds of people moaning in pain grew louder as they approached.
Elsa's chest tightened at the site in front of her. There were people everywhere. Some on cots, others on the floor with nurses and doctors looking over them. There had to be about two hundred. One of the head nurses spotted Elsa and moved over to her bowing. "Thank you Marius. My Queen we-"
"How long as this been going on?" Elsa asked angrily. Then paused taking a deep breath calming herself. "Explain to me in detail what is happening Helga."
The older woman nodded. "It started after the great thaw your majesty. Just a few here and there complaining about headaches. Nothing I haven't seen before. Then a few weeks ago some started showing up with skin cold as ice. Blue fingers and toes. What we do know my queen is that it kills within two to three weeks once the skin starts changing in color."
Elsa's mind started picking through all the information. Her brows narrowed. "You think my magic caused this?"
Helga's face was unreadable and she watched the Queen for a long moment. "Do you fully understand your own magic? Can you say with certainty you had nothing to do with this?"
The temperature in the room dropped and Elsa could feel eyes on her. She opened her mouth to responded then closed it. She looked at her hands. "I-I..."
"You dare accuse the Queen of treason?" Elsa felt relieved hearing Liana's voice. She moved from one of the cells into the nurses face. "She could have your head for that." Helga looked nervous for a moment then scowled at the other woman. "That was not my intention!"
"Like hell it wasn't!"
"As if I care what a little pet has to say!"
"Enough!" Both women paused and looked at their Queen. Elsa approached them glaring for a moment at Helga. "She is not my pet and no one is getting beheaded. I will take care of this. That is all."
The nurse's face scrunched up before she bowed and turned away. Elsa sighed quietly before turning towards Liana who was furiously watching Helga. "Thank you, but that was a bit much." Liana's expression did not change. "She's a vile woman your majesty. If only you could see her mind,"
Elsa blinked confused. "And you can?"
Liana rolled her eyes before facing her. "Are you aware the princess is here?"
This news shook Elsa to her core. She almost lost her before and now this. She felt like she was going to faint. If Liana hadn't rested her hand on her back in comfort she probably would have. "It's not what you're thinking. This way."
Elsa followed her into the cell she originally came out of. She was relieved for a moment when she saw that her sister was okay. Kristoff however, was in bad shape. He was laying on a cot with Anna clutching his hand in tears. It warmed Elsa's heart that Olaf was with her resting his head on her shoulder. He was the first to notice the her. "Elsa! You're here! You can fix Kristoff now!"
Anna looked up at her and was unable to formulate words. She stood up quickly and embraced her. "E-Elsa I don't know what's happening. Everything was fine and then it wasn't and h-he."
Elsa pulled back and stroked away her sisters tears. "Anna it's going to be okay. You have to say strong."
Anna looked away from her. "I'll try. There's just so many in the same state as Kristoff and the Nurses said-"
"Yes I know. Helga has already told me everything..." Elsa quickly thought over everything. If this were truly the after effects of her magic, then there would only be one person she could ask for help. She watched her sister worriedly for a few more moments.
"It might be best if you don't stay here. It is very likely this is contagious."
Anna shook her head and moved back to Kristoff's side. She took his hand, but his eyes remained closed. "I'm not leaving him."
Elsa smiled sadly. "Very well." she looked down at Olaf. "Watch over Anna for me little guy."
Olaf giggled happily. "Oh don't worry Elsa! I'll watch over her like a hawk."
Elsa stood up and approached Kristoff. Resting her hands on his body. "Please hold on."
Liana moved next to Elsa as she stepped out of the cell. It was quiet for a long moment between them. "So to the library then?"
Elsa looked at Liana amazed and slightly alarmed. Liana shrugged. "What? You didn't think I was going to let you do this on your own."
"It would be saf-"
"I'm not sitting here around all this death..." Elsa followed Liana's gaze to bodies that were being covered and removed. "Besides, someone needs to make sure you're well rested and eating all your vegetables."
Elsa looked away from the depressing site and let out a small laugh that did not reach her eyes. " Yes. We need to go to the library."
