Chapter 1: Glass

He was the devil, and his was the first face her eyes had clapped on. His eyes were red and his skin a deathly white; and when he touched her he was ice. Realization hit her hard: this man was the undead. "Finally, you're awake"—but contrast to his pallor and cold fingers, his voice was warm—"I've been waiting."
Waiting? Why would he wait? What did he wait for?
He touched her face, and her body went numb with cold. He slowly slid his fingers to the back of her head and prompted her to sit.
"You've been sleeping on a slab of glass," he said.
Dumbstruck, she stared at him with eyes wide. She opened her mouth and croaked and choked. There were shards of glass in her throat, and her body, she realized, felt heavy and unused. How long had she been sleeping?
"Don't worry," he said, while his hand cupped the curve of her ashen cheek. "I'll help you. Ulvec did this to you, do you remember? He came and attacked us both, and he cursed you with eternal sleep and hid you from me for thirteen years. He must have stolen your voice, too."
She trembled and wished his cold hands could warm her. She closed her eyes and tried to remember this stranger's face and the name Ulvec, but she couldn't. There was a glass wall, an invisible border, between her and her memories.
His brows creased. "Well, do you remember?"
She shook her head. She thought it strange for this dangerous-looking man to know her.
His red eyes turned a lightning blue and a tear streaked down his cheek. He fell on his knees and gasped—a terrible sound which was more like a sob to her. She touched the hair on his nape, and his eyes clapped with hers. "He did more to you. That bastard! I'll kill him!" He clasped her hands and gently whispered, "Stella, can you not even remember my name?"
She shook her head again, and the devil's eyes turned red once more.
His voice was cool, monotonous when he said, "I am called Noctis, and you and I have a piece of Etro."
