Archie was a young boy living in the Hoenn region. From a very young age he'd been abandoned by his parents and raised by an Arcanine who he gave the name "Growly." Sure, it was a Pokemon, and most people don't really care about naming their Pokemon as much as battling or collecting them, but Archie didn't care. He just found Growly to be his companion, his friend, the father that he never had. He could be a little overprotective at times, but he truly cared about Archie. Growly could still, almost vividly, remember what happened all that time ago.

Rain. A hole heap of it. Growly could feel the water pouring on his back and scalp. He could feel his fire type powers weakening. He tried to use flamethrower, certain it would work, but barely a spark of fire came out before it went out, like a candle in the wind. This forest could perhaps give him enough tree shade to recover from the water. He dashed under a large tree with a circle of pebbles around it. He sat under it, gathering twigs and piling them on top of some sort of cloth. There was no rain here, and as he was about to light them, he heard a faint noise from the cloth. It nudged the cloth slightly with its nose, finding a little face in a hole at the top. It had the skin colour of some humans he'd seen, a pinkish kind, but this couldn't be a human. It was too small, and he recalled that humans didn't have a cloth. Perhaps it was a cocoon to protect the younger ones? No matter. He bit off a bit of cloth from the cocoon, and lit a fire with it. The juvenile human reached out a little stubby thing with more little stubby things at the end, resembling a human's hand. "Perhaps this one isn't that bad." He thought as it warmed itself up near the fire. It seemed young and impressionable, and perhaps he could make a mighty warrior and good friend someday. And so they sat, waiting for the storm to pass by the fire.

(Present day)

Archie had barely any sleep the night before his tenth birthday. He was far too excited to sleep. He would finally be able to meet new Pokemon and explore the world! Or the region, at least. He lived in a small town called Littleroot. He had made a fair few friends with the townsfolk, although there was a person he despised. His name was Jack, and it all happened because of a fiasco involving an egg whisk, a bowl of mushrooms, an empty can, and Growly's favourite coffee mug. He found it hard to explain exactly what happened, but the outcome was an unhappy professor because of a smashed wall.

He woke up almost exactly at 6.00 am, and rushed into the bathroom to check his appearance. He took an outfit off a coat hanger and put it on. It was the perfect travelling attire: long tracksuit, a red vest, a blue jacket, a baseball hat that Growly stole from a band of hippies, (blue and white) and a sleek pair of trainers. His blonde hair was hanging over his ocean blue eyes, and so he swung it backwards. It went down to his shoulders. He really needed a haircut.

Archie rushed downstairs, in the kitchen finding Growly with a plate strapped to its back and a frying pan in its mouth. It slipped a few rashers of bacon and eggs onto the plate and placed it on the table. It then proceeded to put on a chef hat as it tried to make a plate of sausages. Growly had become much wiser than Archie in his recent years, but he always had trouble making Sausages. They rolled around in the frying pan, and Growly always got distracted and tried to slap them to make them stay still. When they were done they had many scratch marks in them, but Archie didn't really care. He wasn't one to complain, and it didn't really matter. The two sat down and divided the food onto each plate, and began to eat. It wasn't half bad, considering Growly had only learnt how to cook a few weeks ago.

After breakfast, Archie and Growly set out to the professer's lab. They went inside, but found no-one there. How strange. They heard footsteps behind them, and as they turned they found the professer there with a load of scratch marks on him. He dropped a bag of 3 pokeballs on the floor. "Just...choose whichever one you want..." He said, before falling over and saying "I'm fine, I'll just...rest here for a while..." Archie picked up a pokeball, the one on the far left. "Oh, that's-" He said, before slumping over and saying "Why do I even bother?.."

Archie stepped outside with Growly, releasing the Pokemon from it's ball. It popped out, a little green lizard with a twig in its mouth. It looked at him, and the Pokemon jumped nearly as high as a building in fright when it heard a loud noise from behind Archie. It was Jack shouting at him. "Hey!" He shouted "So you finally got a Pokemon. Wouldn't have thought after that accident with the professer he'd give you one!" Archie looked at him, staring angrily at him. But before he could say anything, Growly jumped in front of him, growling at Jack. "So, the old lug of yours knows how to be independent." He said, while slowly clapping. "Now, it's time to get what you deserve for that time you threw mushrooms at me! Go, Phanpy!" He threw a pokeball, revealing a small, blue elephant. "Alright!" Jack said, "Use Rollout!" The elephant curled into a ball and dashed towards Growly. Archie couldn't even respond before Growly got out of the way and let the elephant crash into the professer's wall. "Whoops..."

Was the only think Jack could say before the wall fell down and he heard the professer shout "OH COME ON?!? AGAIN?!?" Before chasing Jack and his Pokemon down the street. "Wait where's-" Archie started, before he saw his new lizard Pokemon, Treeco, land on top of Jack's head as he fell over. It rushed back into Archie's arms, climbing onto his shoulder and beckoning for him to head towards the next town.
