While it had been many years, there were times that Rebecca still found herself wondering just where Billy Coen had gotten off to and if he was still safe or if he had eventually been captured once again for false claims. Depending on the memory her heart would either ache or flutter as if she were reliving it over and over again.
Sometimes she would fancy that she found him again, just idly on the streets, but she knew it wouldn't ever really happen.
Life just didn't work that way.
Instead life moved on and with it, so did Rebecca, despite the reminiscing every so often. She continued in the law enforcement for a career, not knowing what else she could do and wanting to help, putting her medical skills to good use in the force once again after that dreaded nightmare that happened to all of S.T.A.R.S. so long ago.
But even if she wanted to continue effortlessly in her life and eventually start a family of her own, the memory was still holding Rebecca back.
Every time she found even a decent man who might be boyfriend (and maybe one day, spouse) material in the back of her mind Rebecca found herself comparing the poor guy to Billy, finding comparisons and even the differences. This didn't improve her mood towards the relationship any and eventually each and every one was broken off by her, regretfully and with apology.
Rebecca heaved a sigh as she gazed out of the window, a melancholic smile upon her face as she remembered the very last time she saw him.
They had saluted each other before she had moved on. Now Rebecca wished she had done or said more at the time. But she had been younger then, not as sure of her feelings as she was now. Rebecca ran a hand through her still short hair.
"Someone should really invent a time machine." she chuckled before checking her watch for the time. No more time for reminiscing it seemed, duty called. As she threw on her jacket she hoped, not for the first or last time, that circumstances would bring Billy back to her again.
