Grissom looked over the edge. It was a long way down. Why had he come here? The Hoover Dam of all places.
" construction of the tunnels which were 56 feet in diameter , with a combined length of 16,000 feet…"
the tourist guide said as he passed Grissom with a slow moving group of senior citizens. They had that look in their eyes ( enough culture already , let's hit the strip )
Actually Grissom had read about the construction of the Dam as background to a case of monoxide poisoning. Many of the deaths involved in the tunnel construction were attributed to pneumonia by the contractors, thereby avoiding payouts. A claim that the workers had been poisoned by monoxide was never sustained in court. Grissom pondered on the rudimentary testing procedures of the 1930's which allowed the contractors to muddy the evidence.
" You've got that look. What'cha thinking about ? If it's work related , I may not be responsible and we are on the edge of a long fall!" Sara laughed.
" I was thinking about..why are we here? " Grissom answered , less than truthfully
" Are we talking philosphically ?" teased Sara
" Now that's the sort of question that might lead to me putting you in handcuffs " Grissom played his role in their little game
" What? Again?" Sara was laughing now.
" What made you pick the Hoover Dam? It's a little…tourist" said Grissom. He enjoyed sparring with Sara.
" That's the reason , Gil " Sara said , and walked along the viewing area a little. There was a little skip in her step. Getting away from the lab like this made her feel …exuberant. " We aren't going to bump into any of the guys here . No one in Vegas comes here "
" Sara " Grissom was suddenly all business " Quickly , follow me."
He took her arm and they rushed behind a parked tour coach.
" Whats up . Why are we hiding ? " said Sara
" I've just seen Hodges " said Grissom
Sara thought of the many ways she could make Hodges life miserable in the coming weeks.
" I hear Carson City is lovely at this time" joked Grissom, then regretted it .
" Aw nuts " grimaced Sara " Lets go back to the apartment. This tourist wants a refund"
" Did you know that the Hoover Dam allocates 23.37 per cent of it's power to Nevada?" said Grissom
" Did you know that sleeping on the couch may result if that sort of talk continues?" said Sara
Grissom knew when to shut up.
