After The Battle
The air was thick with dust that cascaded from the stone archways. Draco ran through the chaos as if he was still being pursued bu the cursed fire that consumed anything in its path.
"Stupefy!" "Rictesempra!" A Deatheater barrelled through the air crashing into a wall an inch from where Draco had been. A chunck of debris smacked hard into his back and he toppled forward. He groaned, his face lying in the dust and grit, it felt like he had been drained completely of energy and he considered if he really cared what could happen to him if he just remained lying there.
There was a deafening crack as part of the arch collapsed towards him "Protego!" The heavy stone ricocheted off the shield charm that had been cast. Draco got to his feet and turned to face the person who had saved him.
"Hello Draco" Luna Lovegood said, her dreamy voice seeming out of place in a battle "Are you on our side yet?" Draco was taken aback by the question.
"What side I'm on has nothing to do with you Loony" The name calling sounded childish and he regretted it. He nodded stiffly to her in thanks before making as if to leave.
Suddenly the voice of Voldemort filled the castle.
"I therefore order my forces to withdraw, dispose of your dead with dignity"
The Deatheaters nearby vanished in a swirl of dark mist. Luna looked at Draco, who remained rooted to the spot as the voice faded away.
"Aren't you leaving?" Luna asked "You're on his side aren't you?"
"I. . ." Luna smiled "I knew you were never really his" She walked away towards the Grat Hall, which had been converted into a hospital. Draco found himself following at a distance, he kept to the shadows in case anyone recognised him. He did not fancy facing Potter and Weasly in this situation.
He watched the Weaslys grieve for family and friends and wondered what it was like to have a family that was so close. He couldn't imagine his parents crying over him like Molly and Arthur Weasly were over Fred's body. Luna glanced behind her and spotted Draco watching. Discreetly she picked up a sterile cloth and antiseptic and left the hall.
Draco jumped when she appeared behind him.
"That cut looks nasty" She said, applying antiseptic to the cloth and dabbing at the cut on Draco's hand. He hissed a little at the pain,
"Why are you helping me?"
"Innocent until proven guilty, I'm not the one to judge you"
"He's coming! You-Know-Who's coming!" The shout came from a very battered looking third year, who was using her Hufflepuff tie as a sling. Draco and Luna scrambled to their feet and followed the crowd outside. They were oblivious to Draco, all were fixated by the body in Hagrid's arms.
"Harry! No"
"Stupid girl. From now on you put your faith in me. Now is the time to declare yourselves"
Draco's eyes locked with his parents' across the courtyard. They beckoned him desperately and like a marionette he walked with faltering steps towards them
"Well done Draco"
Luna's words ran through his head.
"You were never really his"
