By the time he's at her door she's gone through a range of emotions, she's cried, she's beaten up her pillow, she's hidden all pictures of him from her sight as she tries to stop her body from heaving with pain.
But all that is gone when she looks through the peephole and sees him there.
She's not sad, upset or in pain anymore….she's mad, no, she's pissed off and she's going to make sure Coop Cooper knows it.
"What do you want?" she asks as she opens the door.
"What do…" he stops, looks confused, then annoyed as he tries to move past her into the room, she stops him, "Ash, what's going on? Where have you been? Do you have any idea how much I needed you tonight?"
"Where have I been?" she says as if she's thinking about it, "Where have I been? Oh yes, I know, I got a tip about Marina, but no one would help me so I went to check it out and got hit over the head, ended up in the hospital. Frank thinks Marina was there though, and alive, so that should brighten your mood considerably."
"Are you….why didn't you call me? I would have come to the hospital."
She takes a deep breath, then in one big rush says, "I came to find you instead….you looked way too busy to come to the hospital."
His body goes still as he figures it out, then he steps forward, reaches for her, "Ashlee…"
"Don't," she says, backing away, "Just…don't." Her anger is slipping, the pain is seeping through, the tears are trying to force their way out, but she won't cry, not here, not now, not in front of him, "Get out."
He shook his head, "You have to listen to me, I was drunk and upset, I wasn't thinking. You didn't show up and I…."
"And you immediately decide to make out with your ex, what else happened after I left? Did you have sex with her?"
"No," he said, firm and quick, "No, it was…." He takes a deep breath, "it was a second, Ashlee, a moment and then I stopped and I knew it was all wrong. If you'd come in two minutes later…"
"I wouldn't know what a lying cheat you were?" she asked, "Too bad for me then."
"Ashlee," he steps forward again, grabs her arms, meets her eyes, "Please don't do this, I…I screwed up, so bad, I know, but don't pull away from me, don't….please, we're doing so well baby, you were finally starting to trust me."
She nods, "I know. I'm not going anywhere, Ash, I'm not dropping out, I only want you….I really started to believe it….in my heart I really believed you loved me, wanted me."
"I do, I do."
She jerks her arms away, "No you don't. For weeks you've been telling me that it's over with Ava, that you want to be with me, that I can trust you and then once, one time I'm not there and this is what you do." She shakes her head, "I can't trust you. I don't believe anything you say."
"Ashlee, I love you."'
"Don't…." she yelled, "Don't insult me with that."
He closed his eyes, trying to figure out what to say. She moved around him and opened the door.
"Get out and don't come back."
"No, I won't…."
"Get out," she yelled, "Or I'll push you out like I did in juvie."
He sighs, knows she's not kidding, and walks over to the door. As she tries to close it he holds it open, "This isn't over Ash, I won't let it be. I love you; I'll prove to you that you can believe in me."
The tears escape then, the pain too much to take, "I did believe in you….and now I'm done. We're done." She closes the door, leans against and whispers, "Good-bye Coop Cooper."
