SUMMARY: Axle the Red wasn't always a Maverick. He had a life before that too... Perhaps not the more glamorous thing, but he and his partner managed to survive. This is a story of that time... and the events that caused Axle to become a Maverick.

Prologue: Urban Flowers

"Axle hurry it up!" Ziv called over the comm. "There's 3 guards heading your way." I really needed to thank my brilliant friend for controlling the museum's cameras. I hastily grabbed the last of our chosen targets and hoisted myself up through the skylight.

"Where's the vehical Ziv?" I asked. "We gotta get a move on!"

Ziv's voice came over the comm again. "No kidding, right? I'm waiting for you on the far side of the museum." Hearing that I hightailed it over to the van. I dropped down, getting in the back just as the museum alarm sounded. "Close one, eh?" Ziv said, disconnecting from the system and looking back at me.

I sighed, shutting the door as she started up the van and started home. I leaned back, taking off my helmet and grinning at her as she drove. We just rode along like nothing had happened. We stopped at lights, didn't run any signs, and finally arrived at the comfy little house we were 'borrowing' from a family on vacation.

Ziv was out first; I came out only an instant later with the loot. "Good haul Babe..." I said, walking inside with her. We'd just made it to the kitchen before I found myself putting my arms around her shoulders, leaning down to her level. "Thanks for keeping an eye on me," I said, kissing her cheek.

She blushed at this. "Just doing my job. You have to keep an eye out for me next time... okay?"

"Sure," I said, holding her tight before letting her go. We'd been partners for a while now, and while we'd tried to keep the relationship proffesional... we'd grown rather attached to each other. I guess that was bound to happen, given how similar we were. We were flowers in this urban jungle... I the Rose, and she the Lily...

Ziv's voice shook me out of my 'moment'. "Let's appraise this loot," she said, smiling at me. We spent most of the remainder of the night looking through and appraising the things I'd taken. We would get them to a fencer first thing in the morning. Finally everything was taken care of... We got out of our armor, well, I did. Ziv hadn't worn hers tonight.

It was a good night, and we went to sleep as usual. I needed to remind her that we'd be leaving this 'home' tomorrow also, because the family would be home the day after. For now though, we could rest easy... Tonight was over...
