"What if the Capulets and Montagues weren't enemies and Juliet and Romeo never had to kill themselves?" you ask.
Sasuke frowns briefly before he says, "Shut up, dobe. Don't think about such stupid things."
I wait for reciprocating, "Teme!" but it never comes. Instead you sit there, looking thoughtful for a moment before smiling.
What if indeed.
"Sakura-chan, what if Orpheus waited until Eurydice was out of the Underworld before he looked back at her? What do you think would have happened?" you ask.
Sakura smiles. "The tale of Orpheus and Eurydice was always one of my favorite myths. It's just so tragic."
"It sure is," Tenten agrees. "But the way Orpheus goes all the way to the Underworld just to get her…"
Not receiving your answer, you walk away shaking your head.
"What if Guinevere never fell in love with Arthur's best friend?" you ask Kiba over lunch.
Kiba raises and eyebrow. "Who's Guinevere?" he asks. "Is that Shikamaru's hot cousin?"
Ino rolls her eyes. You shake your head.
"What if Jack never died at the end of the movie?" you ask.
Hinata blushes and plays with her fingers. "I-I didn't know you were such romantic, N-Naruto-kun."
"I guess you could say that," you say with a smile. "Never thought of it that way before."
A romantic, huh?
"What about if Marius realized how much Epanine loved him, Shino?"
Shino, presumably, stares at you. "I don't know who they are," he says finally, walking away.
You cross your arms over your chest, making Hinata blush all the more, and I can only wonder about your sudden obsession with doomed couples.
"Shikamaru, Choji, what do you think would happen if Catwoman gave up her life of crime?"
"Troublesome," Shikamaru mutters, not looking up from his book.
"I guess the streets of Gotham would be a little safer," Choji replies thoughtfully.
"I mean between Batman and Catwoman," you say, becoming exasperated.
"Wait, are they a couple?" Choji asks, and you bury your face in your palm.
"You've seen Gone With the Wind, right, Lee?" He nods and you continue. "What if Scarlett had just admitted to herself that she loved Rhett before it was too late?"
"You propose and interesting question, Naruto-kun! I will ask Gai-sensei and get back to you!" We all stare as Lee takes off running.
You grumbled. "If I wanted Gai's opinion, I would have asked him instead."
I wish you would have asked me instead.
"Naruto," I ask one day, "how come you haven't asked me my thoughts on a famous doomed couple?"
You look up at me, your blue eyes wide before you smile. "I thought that would be obvious, Neji."
"Obvious?" I ask, not understanding.
"I didn't want to jinx it."
"Jinx what?"
You lean forward, pressing your lips to mine.
"I don't want us to be like them."
"Naruto?" I ask, my hands settling on his hips.
"Yeah, Neji?"
"What if you had never beaten me at the chuunin exams?"
You laugh. "You'd still be an asshole, and I'd still be a loser."
"And?"
"Um…?"
"And I never would have fallen in love with you," I say before kissing you again.
"Neji? What if we live happily ever after?" you ask. From anyone else, it would have sounded corny, but your sincerity at the question made me smile.
"What if indeed."
