Disclamer- I don't own Phantom or Rent. Phantom currently belongs to ALW, Susan Kay, and Gaston Leroux. Rent belongs or belonged to Jonathan Larson, who, I have been informed, died of aids. Oh, now I've set myself crying, so just read my fic and ignore me.
This fic mentions something from the book, Erik's letter to Christine. If you haven't read the book, you should. Enough said.
Christine de Chagny sat atop her horst, tears streaming down her face. "Let's go, Shadow." she whispered to her horse. They began to trot down the country road. She glanced around, noticing everything. How could things go on, be so beautiful like this, when Erik was dead? Remembering his letter brought on another wave of tears. In the midst of her sorrow, she did the only thing that made sense.
"Without you, the ground thaws
The rain falls
The grass grows
Without you, the seeds root
The flowers bloom
The children play
The stars gleam
The poets dream
The eagles fly
Without you
The Earth turns
The sun burns
But I die, without you"
Christine swallowed hard as she reached the cliff. As she had sung, she couldn't live without him. Standing on the edge, she prepared to throw herself off while she sang the rest of the song.
"Without you, the breeze warms,
The girl smiles
The cloud moves
Without you, the tides change
The boys run
The oceans crash
The crowds roar
The days soar
The babies cry
Without you
The moon glows
The river flows
But I die without you"
As she sang these words she leaned foreword to fall, but a voice froze her where she was as it sang-
"The world revives"
Without thinking, she joined in-
"Colors renew"
Their voices blended in sweet harmony that would make any passing stop and listen in wonder.
"But I know blue
Only blue
Lonely blue"
Christine turned, shock coursing through her body. Erik was standing in front of her. Her mind went blank, and she did the only thing that made sense. Instincts taking over, she sang alone.
"Without you…
Without you, the hand gropes
The ear hears
The pulse beats"
She continued to stare at him, ecstasy enveloping her body as she listened to him sing.
"Without you, the eyes gaze
The legs walk
The lungs breathe"
She began to harmonize, just to feel the joy of hearing their voices together.
"The mind churns
The hear yearns
The tears dry
Without you
Life goes on
But I'm gone
'Cause I die without you
Without you
Without you
Without you"
By the end of the song, they were both in tears. As the last note wavered away, Christine walked slowly towards Erik. Tears ran down his face, causing his mask to begin to slip. She slowly reached up and removed it, then pressed her lips to his. This was not like the kiss at the lake, where she was only thinking of saving her childhood friend. This kiss was partly I'm sorry, partly forgive me, but mostly I love you. Erik wrapped his arms around her, and swung her onto his horse. Clutching her to him, they rode away.
Well, I've completed my first song-fic. Read and review!
