You try to remain calm. It cracks as soon as realisation washes over you.
"You're going to get married aren't you?" Her face crumbles as soon as you say it. You raise your voice. It's childish, but you trust your voice not to waver that way. "You must have known I loved you! What lie did you tell yourself every day?" She answers back, arguing her case, "I didn't know how to tell you! I'm so sorry!" You're both crying at this point. "I can't go on like this." Your voice is small because that's how you feel. "It hurts. It hurts to think you'll spend the rest of your life with someone you love and I'll be alone. It hurts me so much it physically destroys me, and I know that isn't possible but that's what it feels like. My heart feels like it's going to spontaneously combust whenever I see you. And it's mostly out of love. But then I think about how you can't be mine. You are the love of my life, but I'm not yours. And I'll just have to come to terms with that. But I can't do it here. I can't stay here. I can't stay with you." The silence that follows deafens you. Thinking she isn't going to reply, you head towards your bedroom for the solitude that you were so used to before she broke down all of your walls. She grabs your arm and you turn to meet the gaze that was intently focused on your back. "Stay," it's barely a whisper but you hear it. "I can't, Jane." You close your eyes to avoid the look of hurt that is sure to be etched across her face. You start to head back towards your room but all you can focus on are the soft sobs and mutterings of "don't, don't leave" coming from behind you. You reach the stairs and glance back for one last look at her. She catches your eye and takes a moment to compose herself. She makes her way over and reaches her hand out slowly to rest against your cheek softly. "If you're really, truly, leaving, at least make it a good goodbye." She leans down and you close the distance. Almost as soon as you're there, she goes. But you pull her back to you, determined not to let her leave. You make your way up the stairs together, kissing like teenagers. There's so many questions. But you don't care, they can be sorted out later. Right now you want her. And that's what you've got.
