Home
"Ashi…" As he watched her fade away, his heart dropped into his stomach and an oppressive cold sensation washed over his body. It couldn't end like this. He'd suffered too much, too long, to lose the happiness he'd finally been given. In seconds her kimono hung light and limp in his trembling hands.
"Ashiiiiiii!"
Jack awoke with a sharp, painful breath. The paper panels on the windows gently glowed with the soft white light of morning. Jack took a moment to soak in his surroundings to remind himself where he was.
A bedroom in the royal palace. My bedroom in the royal palace.
Soft breathing registered in his ears and his head turned slowly to face the source of it.
Ashi's round face, complete with messy black hair, doll-like lips, and closed black lashes, was paler than usual in the dim light, but no less beautiful.
For a second he was still frozen, gripped with fear that at any moment she could be taken away from him. Then came a thought. If time is designed so that the future will affect those that have gone to the past, she would have already ceased to exist the moment I killed Aku. But Ashi is still here. She is-
The lashes fluttered and Jack found himself staring into the eyes of his new wife.
"Jack."
He smiled weakly at her.
"Jack, how long have you been awake?"
He continued to drink in her lovely face with his eyes, not saying a word. He released a long, shuddering sigh before he realized it.
Concern furrowed her forehead. "Jack, are you okay?"
His hand fumbled across the bed until it found her warm shoulder. She reached up her hand and slipped her fingers through his. She had opened her mouth again to speak when Jack finally found his voice.
"Now that I have returned and Aku is gone, life goes on as though I never left. No one will know of the countless years I spent in the future trying to return home. No one, not even you, know of all my labors and sufferings. But Ashi-"
His voice trembled and he gripped her hand tighter. "I'm glad that it happened. Every hour, every year, every journey, every battle, and everything in-between…was worth it…because now you're here."
She pressed his hand to her cheek and he felt hot tears reach them.
"I'm not worth that, Jack." Her voice was shaky.
He smiled. "Yes, you are." He wiped the tears from her cheek, leaned forward, and kissed her.
Jack had come home.
