Keith had been quiet since finding out about his alien heritage. A little too quiet. Annoyingly quiet. It only got worse with Shiro's disappearance. But, their friend was back safely in the castle, so that should have accounted for something. Yet, despite getting Shiro back, Keith's mood seemed to sour anytime he was reminded of his new role as Paladin leader. There were times where he'd stay in his room and wouldn't come out unless it involved training or eating, and the latter usually didn't happen.
It got to the point where Lance took notice. Sure, it had been nice to not see Keith's smug face, walking around like he was better than everyone else. But, there was a limit, and even Lance knew that their entire team had to be on board emotionally to fight the Galra. Especially when it came to piloting and forming Voltron.
So, one night after dinner, he found the new Black Lion's Paladin sitting on his bed, gazing at his hands in some thought. After some quiet, Lance cleared his throat.
"Look, man. So what if you're part Galra or whatever? That doesn't mean you're a bad guy. You've gotten this far saving the universe, haven't you?" Since Keith didn't answer, he continued, "And, you've led the team pretty well so far! You got us all back alive! That's gotta count for something!"
Keith could have told Lance to get lost, but instead kept staring at his hands, muttering quietly in response.
"Plus, Red probably wouldn'tve picked you at first if he found something weird about you, right? And, I'm pretty sure Black knows better than to just pick anyone. So, don't worry about it. You're part of our team. Not like being a part of what you're fighting is gonna change your mind."
"That's just it." Keith huffed out a sigh. "Maybe... if I'm one of them... What if there's a chance I could...?" He couldn't finish his sentence. Would there be such a thing as his Galra ancestry causing him to turn on his own team?
Lance abruptly froze. "Wait. So what you're saying is that you're gonna turn on us?! I knew it!" Before Keith could react, Lance had him in a stranglehold, barking towards the doorway. "SHIRO! Come talk some sense into Keith! He's going insane!" He paused, ignoring the protests from his surprised captive. "Maybe after I punch some sense into him! Can I punch some sense into him?!"
"You're an idiot!" Keith yelled, flailing and attempting to pull away from the headlock.
"An idiot who's not turning on his team!"
"I never said I was!"
"Ha! Only a Zarkon mole would say that!" Lance tightened his grip. "Talk, you fiend!"
The inevitable sounds of yelling and fighting reached the main room. Pidge was the first to acknowledge this as she paused in the middle of her video game. "You're... not gonna say something to them?"
Shiro never looked up from his book. "Eventually they'll have to knock each other out. I'll talk to them when they're in the infirmary."
Beside him, Hunk arched a brow. "But, they'll be out cold."
"Exactly."
