Story One: Lswarm
"I'm sorry Star… I'm sorry that it had to end like this."
Tears roll down my cheeks as I drop the Glock pistol that just finished off the formerly-blonde-haired princess.
"But why did it have to come to this?" I say as I drop to my knees and pound at the ground in anger, "It wasn't your fault that the virus infected you! It was mine! We shouldn't have followed that star chart!"
*Sniffle* "I should've been there when you needed me. But I wasn't, and now you're dead because of me!"
I sob so loud that for a second, I thought that the "people" nearby would hear me. Then again, I really wouldn't care. I have no reason to fight anymore. Now that Star's gone, what's the point of staying alive?
Then, I look at Star's body again, before coming closer, and embracing her. I don't know if the infection will spread this way, but it doesn't matter to me. I want to die as close to star as I possibly could.
I feel someone tap my shoulder. So I turn and find, a man. Or at least I think it's a man. I can't really tell behind the black balaclava that they're wearing.
They look at me and say in a semi-feminine, semi-masculine voice, "Hey kid, I was walking around here, and I heard someone sobbing and…" their eyes caught sight of Star, "What happened to her?"
I turn to face Star again, and I just break down crying.
They pat me on the back, before saying in a calm and comforting tone, "Calm down kid, everything's going to be fine."
Personally, I wanted to clam down. But I just couldn't. So I just continue crying my eyes out.
They carefully lift me up and get me to stand on my own two feet, before pulling me into a hug and saying, "During times like this, you have to let go of what you hold dear to survive kid. And the only way to let go, is to get some closure."
I look at them with my tear-filled eyes, as they continue, "So please, tell me what happened kid. How did she end up like this?"
They let me free of the embrace. And so, I sit on the cold, hard ground near Star's body. The person follows, by sitting on the other side of her body, before I start.
"I guess this all started three days ago, during a crazy inter-dimensional adventure. Star and I were visiting Mewni to have lunch with King and Queen Butterfly. After all, I was engaged to their daughter."
"So this is the boy my daughter is marrying! Ahh, this boy looks like a fine young man!" King Butterfly gave me one heck of a bear hug as he greeted me.
Star pulled me out of his grip as she said, "Yeah dad! He's the nicest person I know."
Queen Butterfly looked at me with an evil glare. It was probably because she didn't approve of her daughter marrying her guide from Earth.
But, I guess I just ignored it. I mean, seriously, why would her mom not approve? So I just shoved my, what I thought were paranoid thoughts in the back of my mind, as two guards came, and escorted us to a small dining room.
Now you think that all castles have the largest places to eat and the entire family eats in the grand dining hall every day. Well Mewni would surprise you then.
The room was like a small apartment. Heck, it was almost the exact same thing! The only difference was that there was no bedroom and that the table took the entirety of what would be the living room.
If I didn't know better, I'd have thought that I was back on Earth.
"Surprising isn't it Marco?" Star couldn't help, but laugh as she remarked, "Welcome to the informal dining room!"
I walked over to the oak wood table with a simple white cover s I said, "Wow, I thought this would be way bigger. I mean this is so unexpected."
Star just smiled as she started, "This is where we serve close family friends and family members…"
And King Butterfly continued, "And since you're engaged to our daughter, and have been her guide for close to ten years now, I see it fit to call you one."
You wouldn't believe how happy I was! I was engaged to the girl of my dreams and her father saw me as a close family friend.
But I just couldn't shake the fact the Queen Butterfly seemed to dislike me. Yet, I didn't let it bother me. I wanted to make the best possible first impression I could! After all, these were my fiancée's parents!
So I got a hold of myself, and took a seat on one of the padded wooden chairs. It had beautiful stained-glass window behind it.
While I sat there, I marveled at the elegant simplicity of the room.
King Butterfly took the seat to my right and Queen Butterfly took the one to my left. Star took the seat directly across from me.
When we were all seated, King butterfly went into his pocket, and pulled out bell. Then he handed it to me, before saying, "Would like to do the honors?"
You wouldn't believe how happy I was! Star's dad really saw me as a good man for his daughter!
And so I nervously said, "Ju-Just ring it?"
The King looked at me, gave a hearty laugh and said, "Why yes my dear boy!" So I lift the bell, and gave it a little shake. *Ring* *Ding* *Ring* *Ding*
And in a few seconds, a very simply, yet elegantly, dressed woman walked into the room and came over to me. She looked at me carefully, before smiling, and saying to the four of us, "Hello, my name is Selena, and I am here to serve you today."
Then she looked at King Butterfly, "What would you like for lunch, your majesty?"
He looked at me and said, " What would you like?" And I have to say, I felt pretty damn honored.
But I had no idea what to choose; I wasn't on Earth after all. "I don't know your majesty. I'm not from around here after all."
The king gave a hearty laugh, "Oh, ho, ho, ho, my boy." Then he turned to Selena and said, "Bring us whatever the cook thinks is best!"
Selena nodded, before quickly and wordlessly walking out of the small, magenta room.
Then the king turned to face me again, and said, "Well my boy, Marco right?" I nod as he continued, "While we wait for our food to be served, why don't you tell us a little about yourself? After all, you are marrying our daughter."
And, heh, I couldn't help, but be nervous. I know I said this before, but it's true. These were my fiancée's parents! And I didn't want it to seem like I wasn't fit to marry Star.
So I carefully thought about what I would say, before answering, "Well, I come from a middle-class family on Earth. And I've known your daughter for close to ten years. And well, I'm known as the safe kid around my town, but I do take risks sometimes…"
King Butterfly cut me off, "My lad, it looks like you're trying too hard. But you do seem like a nice boy for daughter. What do you think honey?"
Queen Butterfly just had a disapproving scowl on her face. She didn't say anything, but I already knew that she didn't approve of me.
"I do not approve at all. Why is she marrying a commoner?!" Her scowl turned to anger, as she screamed, She should be marrying a son of one of your Nobles!"
I was pretty damned surprised. I mean seriously, the king was fine with me marrying Star, but why was the queen against it?
The king yelled, "That's enough!" In a commanding voice, and continued in a slightly calmer tone, "When Star was born, you promised that we would let her choose who she wanted to marry. After all, isn't it best that we deviate from the old way and try something thing new? How did you feel when our parents arranged our wedding?"
Queen Butterfly sighed and sat back in seat.
Then King Butterfly took Star's and my hands, before saying, "So do you approve of him, my queen?"
The queen sighed again and said, "Though our history says that he is not proper, I will approve out of love for my daughter and you my king. And so we may deviate from the old way."
"Then I herby bless this union, take good care of our daughter." The king was crying tears of joy as he continued, "You've grown up my daughter."
Then he hugged Star, the way only a father could do to his daughter.
After a few seconds of hugging, he let go of my fiancée and quickly got a hold of himself.
And just in time too, because right after he got back in his seat, our food arrived.
Selena and three other women brought our food in, and as by medieval tradition, they tasted each of our dishes.
It was a nice lunch. Although I had absolutely no idea what the heck I was eating, it was still delicious.
"I couldn't believe what was happening, everything was going so well. I was getting married to the girl of my dreams! And her parents approved!" I said, while looking directly at the their balaclava.
They calmly respond, while putting their arm on my shoulder, "Calm down kid. And tell me, what happened next?
I wipe the tears from my eyes as I continue; "We spent most of the day there, just traveling around Mewni. Afterwards, King Butterfly bid us farewell."
"Yet, before we left, Selena came and greeted us." My voice gained a serious tone, as I said, "And I think it was because of her that this happened."
"Why?" The stranger asked, "What did she do?"
I look them straight in the balaclava as I say, "She gave us a piece of parchment known as the Lswarm Star Chart."
"The Chart was jet-black and had a red symbol on it's top, under the word Lswarm. It had several dots thrown around a map of the night sky. I couldn't read it, but apparently Star could." I say, hoping that my description of the chart was good enough.
"So what did you do next?" They say, while moving closer to me.
So I reply, "So we decided that we should explore the place shown of the chart. After all, apparently, the place marked on the chart was an unexplored territory."
Star grabbed her pair of dimensional scissors, and concentrated on the Star chart. Then, the parchment began to glow dull red, as she used the scissors to cut an opening into another dimension.
When we reached the point marked on the chart, we found a dead, rocky planet. We scanned the barren landscape for any remnant of a society or at the very least, life.
"What happened here?" Star said, while she dug at the grey dirt with her foot. I took some of the dirt in my hand and said, "It looks like something serious happened here."
"Obviously," Star says in a sarcastic tone, while rolling her eyes. Then, she stared to walk in a random direction, "Come on, lets find something around here."
I nodded in agreement, and grabbed her hand, before saying, "Let's go."
And so we walked through the barren wasteland holding on to each other tightly. Heh, if it weren't a barren wasteland, I'd have believed that we were on a nice stroll on the beach.
The air around us gave me a feeling of despair. It was completely quiet. The only sounds came from the wind blowing across the rocky landscape, and from Star and I. There was no one and nothing around us.
So we walked for an hour or two, before we found something. We saw a massive triangular building just poking out from the rocky desert landscape.
"Whoa," Star couldn't help, but be in awe as we entered the beautiful temple-like building, that lied in the midst of a destroyed planet.
We shouldn't have gone to that planet, but we did. We should've have gone deeper into the temple, but we did. We shouldn't have searched the temple, but we did.
We went deeper just out of curiosity. Together, we overcame the traps awaiting us. And we found something amazing at the end of the temple.
The final room was just a massive box. The floor was covered in lava. Hey, at least it had some color. It was one of the very few colorful things I saw on that grey planet.
At the center of the room was a platform suspended in the air by a single, beautifully decorated pillar. On the platform was a single pedestal with an orb on it. The platform was connected to the exit by a single, thin bridge.
The two of us carefully crossed the bridge, hoping that our combined weight wouldn't cause it to go down. And thank whoever was watching out for us, because we managed to reach the other end safely.
Then Star grabbed for the orb. That orb gave me a really bad feeling the closer I got to it.
But I don't think Star felt the same way, because Star went to grab for it without hesitation. I cried out, "Star don't grab it!" But I was too late.
When Star grabbed the orb, it released a dark mist that enveloped her, before disappearing. Star looked very light-headed, and dazed, before she fell to the ground unconscious.
Within seconds, I picked Star up, grabbed her scissors, and opened a portal back home to Earth. I don't know why, but I choose to not bring her to the hospital. Heh, I guess it wouldn't have mattered anyway; hospitals aren't equipped to deal with something like this.
So instead, I brought her home and carefully tucked her into her bed. And I hoped that she would be better in the morning.
The next day, Star woke up as good as new. It was as if that dark mist had absolutely no effect on her. You know how that turned out.
"Hey Marco, I'm fine." She said to me, and I regret not going deeper. But I took her word for it anyway. I had no proof that there was anything wrong with her, heck I didn't even know what was in that mist!
Even though in chose to deny that anything was wrong with her, I still had that feeling in the back of my mind, that something was off with her. It was as if that orb had changed her in a way that I didn't notice.
It was about five hours later that I found out what the orb had done.
When I came home, Star pounced on me, looked at the outside world, and ran out of the home like a rabid animal.
I watched helplessly as she started biting our neighbors and anyone who came near her trying to restrain her.
Anyone she bit grew a long, purple tail. Their skin turned blue-ish purple, and their feet turned to hooves. They grew muscles and deformed faces on their bodies. The… virus that Star had spread turned them into plaguespreader zombies.
Then, she began to change. Her golden hair turned a wicked white. She no longer used the wand for her magic. The virus had given her special, dark powers. And the wand became useless. It was as if the wand's magic was transferred to Star.
With her new, magical powers, she gave the plaguespreaders the power to change anyone they bit into her followers, mindless zombies. And from there, the zombies could change more 'normal' people into zombies.
Star had effectively caused the zombie apocalypse to happen in a matter two days.
This morning, I met up with a group was Army rangers sent to contain this mess. From them, I learned that Star was moving across town, and was in a warehouse, building her zombie kingdom.
I was sent with a squad of ranger to, try to reason with or "contain" her if things went bad.
And I'll summarize what happened to us with one line, "When shit hits the fan, it creates a shit storm."
So with a squad of soldiers behind me, we fought through hordes of the undead to reach Star. But when we got to her, she was no longer my fiancée, the girl I fell in love with.
We tried to reason with her, but there's no point of reasoning with the reasonless.
She attacked us, and even turned some of the squad into plaguespreaders
And so, with a heavy heart and with the fate of the world in my hands, I took the glock I was given to defend myself with, and fired five rounds into the zombie master.
Overkill much? Yeah, but you know the rules when dealing with zombies, always double tap.
"And that's how I ended up here." I say with tears rolling down my cheeks.
The stranger gets up, helps me stand on my own feet, before saying, "Thank you. Without her, the plaguespreaders will die. Although anyone who was turned zombie is stuck as one, and the zombie apocalypse is not over yet."
I look at them and say, "How do you know?"
"Because Marco, I know what we're dealing with." The stranger began to take off the balaclava they were wearing.
Then it hit me; the stranger had called me Marco. I just thought, "Could it be? Is it true?!"
Then I saw the face under the mask. I couldn't help, but feel joy as I cried out, "Star! You're… you're alive?!"
With downcast eyes, the princess replied, "No, I've just been given a chance to say goodbye. Thank you for freeing me Marco."
I held her hands and said, "Please don't leave me again." I could see tears in her eyes as she replies, "I'm sorry Marco, but I know I'll see you soon."
Then she smiles at me, gives me one of her warm hugs, before kissing me. I don't want this moment to end. I don't want to have to say goodbye.
But alas, all good things must come to an end, and Star has to break our embrace. She has tears in her eyes as her body began to disappear.
Her last words to me were, "See ya on the other side Marco, my love."
I have tears in my eyes as I respond; "I'll you on the other side Star, my love…"
*Groan*
"Aww fuck," I whisper as a zombie rounds a nearby corridor, and enters the room I'm in.
In a split second, I grab the Glock off the floor, and fire, hopefully killing the infected. I didn't stick around to find out, or even bother to double tap.
There were hundreds of infected entering the building, trying to avenge their fallen leader.
So, I fight my way through the building, killing as many as the infected as I possibly could. Before, I run outside.
And when I run outside, I'm greeted by a tall, barbed-wired fence.
"Fuck." That's the only word I could think of in this situation.
*Groan* I turn around and find ten more infected coming towards me, even worse, two of them have army uniforms on, "Aww double fuck."
I quickly check my ammo reserves. No spare clips, no other weapons or anything that can be used as a weapon are around me.
I pull out my Glock, and pull out the magazine.
"Ten enemies, one bullet." I can't help but chuckle as I say, "Who do I shoot?"
Then, I lift the gun, and aim.
And within seconds, I fall to the ground with a single bullet hole in my head.
Then, I die with only one thought on my mind, "I'm going to see you soon, Star. I'll see you on the other side."
