Double Hubble- this is lightly AU, sort of a what if? kind of thing. enjoy!

It was the first day of the school year at Cackle's Academy, and Miss Cackle was already having to deal with her Deputy's differing opinions.

"Are art classes really necessary, Miss Cackle?" asked Miss Hardbroom.

"We've gone through this 20 times, Constance, and I'm not changing my mind, I can't, I've promised Lynne the position."

Miss Hardbroom sighed. "This is the 22nd time, Miss Cackle."

"22 times, then," said Miss Cackle. "Now, where are the class lists got to?"

Outside, the students were arriving, mostly by broomstick, except for the first years, who hadn't learnt to fly yet. Some were having more success than others; two of the less successful girls were having an argument.

"Hettie! That was your fault we crashed!" Said Mildred.

"You let me ride with you," said Henrietta, grinning. This was why Mildred Hubble found her cousin annoying. Their parents had insisted that Mildred take Hettie with her. It was Hettie's first year at Cackle's, and Mildred's fourth year.

Mildred started picking up her things, and noticed that the cat carrier had come open, and tabby had run off. "Wait here while I find Tabby, would you?" Mildred asked.

"You're not even supposed to be using the cat carrier," said Hettie. "You're in fourth year now."

"Look, walkers' gate isn't far, why don't you go on ahead?" Mildred suggested.

"I will then." Hettie replied, taking off through the woods, leaving Mildred look for Tabby.

In her office, Miss Cackle was still looking for the class lists. "Where on earth are they?" she wondered aloud, as she searched her desk draws.

"On top of your desk, Amelia, I can see them from here." said Miss Hardbroom.

Outside, Hettie had arrived at walkers' gate, was talking to a girl named Crescentmoon Winterchild, or Cressie for short. Hettie could already they would be friends. Then, an older girl flew in on her broom, and landed, followed by two younger girls. "You're a Hubble, aren't you?" the older girl said in a bossy voice.

"Yes, or course I am," said Hettie. "why would I not be?"

"Watch your cheek, Hubble," the bossy girl said. "We're the Hallows." She motioned to her sisters. "Come on, Sybil. Mona, we'll see you later." The bossy girl took off on her broom, followed by Sybil. "Don't mind my sister," said Mona. "Ethel's just bossy."

"Hey, look what I can do," said Hettie. She held out her broom, told it to hover, and sat down on it. "Now I don't have to stand."

Meanwhile, Mildred had found Tabby, and had met up with her friends in the courtyard. "Art classes with Miss Lamplighter! Brilliant!" Mildred exclaimed, when she was told about the new teacher at Cackle's.

"And Miss Bat's come back from Mongolia!" said Maud.

"Wicked!" said Enid. "She's so entertaining."

"And Batty!" exclaimed Maud.

"What!" Miss Hardbroom exclaimed. "Another Hubble!"

"Yes, Mildred's cousin." said Miss Cackle, as she and Miss Hardbroom walked toward the front doors. She had predicted her colleague's response to the class list exactly. As the two teachers came into the courtyard, they noticed a figure on a broom rising over the wall.

Mildred had noticed, too. "Hettie!" she yelled. "What are you doing?"

"I don't know!" Hettie yelled back. "It just took off by itself!" she clung tightly to the broom as it zoomed over the courtyard.

"Steer it down, Hettie!" yelled Mildred.

Hettie angled the broom downward,- and found herself headed straight for Miss Hardbroom. Miss Hardbroom's yes went wide, Hettie screamed, Miss Hardbroom tried to back out of the way- but it was too late. THUD! CRASH! Hettie and Miss Hardbroom were in a tangle on the ground. Miss Cackle and Mildred ran over. "Is everyone alright?" Miss Cackle asked. Miss Hardbroom's voice answered from somewhere under Hettie, "This must be the new Hubble, I presume?"
