Fairy Tales

By Hally Dang

I was lost in a dream with no one to wake me up.

I was living an illusion.

What color are your eyes?

Blue.

No. Black.

Maybe navy.

Or perhaps…

Blue…

No, no. They are black.

Black as coal.

Black as the sky at night.

But…

They are blue.

They are blue.

…I am wrong?

Tell me.

Don't keep me guessing.

Please?

Tell me I'm wrong.

Tell me I'm right.

What color are they?

Why can't you tell me?

Why are they so mysterious?

Elusive, even.

Surreal.

Cryptic.

Why do you keep them hidden behind those wire rimed things?

Is it because they see too much?

Do they see everything?

Or nothing at all?

Can you tell what I'm thinking right now?

Can you see everything through them?

Can you?

Answer me.

…why do you look so sad?

Did I say something wrong?

Why are you looking at me that way?

Why?

…they are sapphire.

Sapphire.

Yes. That's it.

They are sapphire.

Sapphires like the night sky.

Sapphires like the ocean.

Sapphires like your eyes.

She stared at him. Hard.

She wanted to turn away.

But found her body unable to respond.

They were so close.

She can almost feel the heat radiating off his body.

He's so beautiful.

In his own way.

A contained. Controlled. Untouchable. Beauty.

But his eyes…

They were something else.

They were cold.

Cold like ice.

Yet so warm.

So tender.

So close…

Yet so far away.

They are everything she wanted.

Everything she needed.

And everything she despised.

She studied him closely.

They were indifferent.

Blank.

They showed no emotion.

They were just are.

She finds them intruding.

That she is unable to turn away.

She wanted to turn away.

But can't.

They held so much.

Yet they are void.

They saw everything.

Yet nothing at the same time.

They were vacuum.

Yet everything is written within its depth.

A powerful wisdom. Age.

That was what they stood for.

And they frighten her.

Yes, that's right. Frighten her.

He knew.

He had known all along.

He knew from the very beginning.

And now they mocked her.

Mocked her of her ignorance.

Her stupidity.

But why did he stay….?

Two figures were unbelievably close.

A warm hearth flickered in the background causing shadows to dance upon their faces.

And a door was open waiting to be closed.

"You have to let me go." A soft whisper hushed.

There was silence. And the two figures were motionless.

"I know."

"You can't hold me this way."

"I know."

"All fairy tales have to end."

"I know."

"So why…"

"Because…"

A pregnant pause hung in the air.

"Because…" He repeated. "I… I… was…"

She suddenly understood.

His eyes smiled at her.

A sad. Tortured. Uneasy. Forlorn. Fake. Smile.

"Because..."

He didn't finish.

Instead he turned.

Breaking her stare.

And the door closed with a soft click.

I'm sorry.

AN: I hope you actually got that. I wrote this really really late at night so I'm not even sure if this made sense or not. So if you got it, good for you! I congratulate you! You get a prize! ^^
