The world of Nereus had been plunged into turmoil ever since the
disappearance of Squall Leonhart, leader of the brave band of SeeDs that
had banished the evil duo, Ultimecia and Griever to their graves. He had
been proclaimed a hero and became known as the greatest SeeD that ever
lived.
However as the years went by, whilst the rest of the world lived in peace
and prosperity, Squall became more and more removed from his friends,
confining himself to his house during the daylight hours, tortured by the
scenes he had witnessed in the Dark Queen's castle of terror. Soon it
became apparent, that the one which had once destroyed true evil, had now
become evil himself, his soul captured by Ultimecia's immortal spirit.
Exactly 10 years from that fateful day, when Ultimecia and her guardian were expelled from the world, Squall simply vanished into thin air. Since that moment, Nereus had deteriorated once more, and the people sank into a state of depression. All sources of metals dried up, businesses went bankrupt, rivers became stagnant and the whole world became a slum. As food supplies dried up, and water supplies ran low, the world was faced with a serious dilemma. The cause of the events seemed unexplainable, and could only be vaguely linked with Squall's departure. The people of Nereus turned to SeeD to provide them with a saviour once more, but there was no Squall this time, and the Gardens were still recovering from their defeat by Ultimecia's forces. The situation looked hopeless...

Seifer Almasy, long time rival of Squall, sat dozing peacefully on the pier of Fisherman's Horizon, with a rod loosely held in his hands. It had been a slow morning, and he'd had no success with his fishing for several days. The line stiffened and the reel whirred out more line, jerking Seifer out of his sleep. He grasped the rod tightly, and slowly wound the line back in, finally revealing his reward, a rotten and decomposing fish. "Aww...not another one!" he moaned. Catching any type of fish was rare these days, even dead ones. The sun beat down upon his back and he decided to retire to the shade of a near-by cafe. He pulled up a chair and attracted the attention of a waiter.
"Hey waiter, i'll have a slice of toast and look sharp about it!"
"As you wish sir" replied the waiter, and hurried off into the kitchens.
Seifer allowed his eyes to wander aimlessly about the cafe, taking in the young man drinking at the bar, the romantic couple sitting at the table next to him, and the elderly gentleman feeding scraps to his dog. His attention was suddenly attracted however, by the young woman who had just entered the cafe. Her face was familiar to him, but he couldn't put a name to it, unless. His thoughts were confirmed, when her eyes fell on him and she let out a small "Oh!" of surprise. It was Xu. "Fancy seeing you here" said Seifer, in a calm, seemingly disinterested voice.
"Oh well, haven't you heard?" The tone of her voice was sceptical, as though she believed that everyone should know the news.
"Heh, you forget that i'm nothing to do with Garden anymore. Do enlighten me" he replied nonchalantly. Xu eyed him over with distaste. 'Same old Seifer, same old attitude' she thought to herself.
"Oh yes, well I suppose you should know.... being his friend and all.... the search for Squall has begun!"
