"I'm bored," Steven moaned. He looked at Connie who appeared to be sitting on the ceiling from where he lay upside down on the couch. "This game isn't fun anymore." They had been trying to see if blowing bubblegum bubbles was easier while upside down or right side up.
"Well there isn't much else to do. It's raining and the sun's going to set soon. You should be glad my parents are even letting me stay here this late." Connie stood up. "But yeah, I'm bored too."
Steven jumped up, a great idea in mind. "Why don't we watch some TV?!" He threw one fist into the air as he said the last word causing Connie to laugh.
"Yeah okay that works." They walked up the short flight of stairs to the loft and began to channel surf. "Man nothing's on. What luck."
Steven frowned. He hated feeling like he was too boring for Connie. He wouldn't let that stop him from trying to turn this day around though. "I know, I know! Dance party!"
Connie brightened up and set aside the remote control. "Yes!" They both laughed and made their way back downstairs to turn on the stereo. Steven picked out what Garnet would describe as a 'funky tune' and they both started hopping around and bobbing their heads and spinning in circles. They were having so much fun. Soon their laughter was louder than the music. Connie held out her hand and spun Steven in a circle, leading him directly into her arms. The inevitable flash of light appeared and suddenly the two had become one.
"Oh," Stevonnie said, not dancing anymore. "Oh yeah I forgot that would happen." They laughed. "It actually feels so cool being Stevonnie," they said to no one but themself. "Well…" They looked around, hoping no one had seen them yet. "Might as well enjoy it right?" They laughed and disappeared from the house.
The rain was coming down hard and lightning lit up the sky every other minute. It smelled like salt and hot pavement. The dreary atmosphere only seemed to amplify Stevonnie's good mood though. They jumped in every puddle they saw. Somehow their cheeks never got tired of smiling. It felt like Steven and Connie were still dancing inside of them, never losing the beat. The rain was their music and as long as it pattered against the ground, they would dance to it. It was nice to have this time, the two of them, completely to themselves. It was the purest form of friendship.
As the rain slowed, Stevonnie found their way to the beach. They sat down just as the sun was lowering over the horizon. What a great day it had ended up being. The waves were slow and peaceful despite the storm. Everything was silent. So silent that Steven was surprised to look down and see his own two feet a few minutes later. He wasn't surprised though, when he looked over and saw Connie's hand in his.
