in this, katara and aang are married. sokka and toph are.....involved.
Katara looked up at the moon. Usually she thought about Yue when it was full like this, but tonight her thoughts were elsewhere.
Tonight Katara thought about lying. What had got her mind on lying was the fight she had had with Aang earlier that day.
"Why can't you tell me the truth for once, Katara?!"
"I always tell you the truth!"
"You hardly ever do! Can't you trust me by now? I'm pretty sure that trust is a major part of marriage you know."
"Oh, really, Aang? Then why won't you trust me on this?"
Aang had opened his glider and flown off then. Katara had screamed after him,
"You always run away!"
Maybe that's why she couldn't tell him now. Her hand curved protectively over her stomach. Aang had asked why Toph had to come listen to Katara's heartbeat, in a separate room. He had learned enough of how to sense vibrations over the year to know Katara was lying when he asked her why.
Katara knew Aang wouldn't run away. But her mother's death so long ago had left her with a hidden fear of abandonment, and it made her feel sick to even think about him in such a way. Oh, wait, that wasn't abandonment…
Katara clasped her hand to her mouth, fighting nausea. After a few moments, she relaxed. Katara knew she would have to tell him soon.
Toph had determined the baby was at least two months along.
Which meant Katara would have to tell Aang before she began to show.
And he would be angry she hadn't told him earlier. Tears filled Katara's eyes at the thought. Aang did have a point however. Katara realized that she did lie to him. Granted, it wasn't all the time, but she had lied.
She had covered the Fire Nation helmet at the Southern Air Temple. Trying to protect him, but still, it was technically a lie.
When she told him she was confused when they saw the Ember Island Players, that was a lie. She knew exactly how she felt. But the fact that she knew scared her. That's why she reacted so strongly after he kissed her.
And so many others in the years after the war.
She had lied about Sokka and Toph's relationship, but only because they asked her to. She wasn't even supposed to know, but she had walked in on them having a…. heated…. discussion.
She had lied about a meeting being cancelled in Ba Sing Se, because it was their honeymoon, and she didn't wanted him to leave.
And now, she was lying about being pregnant.
With his baby.
With their baby.
Nausea flooded her again, but this time she couldn't control it. She turned and emptied her stomach into the nearest bush. She silently scolded the little child growing inside her. She ran her hand over stomach, feeling the heat emanating from beneath her clothes.
Liar or not, Katara was still Aang's wife. She looked back up at moon one last time, before turning to go back into her home to wait for Aang to get back. When she would tell him everything. Anything he wanted to know.
