Short and sweet. Inspired by comments on a poll asking which Hiro liked best: Charlie, Ando, or waffles, in which someone suggested Ando making waffles would be the optimum choice.

Birthday Waffles

Hiro wakes up to a voice murmuring in his ear, "Good morning." He opens his eyes slowly and blinks blearily at Ando, hovering inches from his face.

Hiro's face breaks into a childlike smile and he stretches like a cat, eyes squeezed shut due to his wriggling. "Morning!" He replies cheerily. Ando unconsciously mirrors Hiro's blissful smile before kissing Hiro on the lips.

"Take your time getting up; I'll be in the kitchen."

After Ando has left, Hiro rolls on his stomach, spreading out on the bed. "No work today," he mumbles happily into the mattress.

Some time later—he must have drifted off—Hiro wakes again, this time to the delicious smell of…something. He stretches some more and says aloud, "I wonder what that could be?" His stomach growls in agreement.

Not bothering to change, Hiro runs a hand through his messy bed-hair and puts on his glasses before shuffling into the kitchen, following his nose (and his stomach). There, he discovers Ando hurriedly arranging something on a large plate.

"Hey, Ando-kun, what's—" he begins.

"Happy birthday, Hiro!" Ando exclaims, setting a huge stack of waffles on the table. He lights the candles on top with a flourish. Hiro is too surprised to react properly at first, prompting Ando to add, "It's a waffle breakfast cake!" He looks expectantly at the shorter man.

Finally, Hiro throws his arms around Ando's waist, practically squealing with delight. "Ando-kun! You made me waffles! They look so delicious! Are you wearing an apron?" He pulls away to inspect said apron.

Ando pulls out of his grasp, looking sheepish. "I didn't want to get my clothes messy," he says quietly, his face all kinds of red. Abruptly, Hiro is hugging him again.

"Thank you so much! This is wonderful! I'm so hungry!" He peppers Ando's face with kisses, making the other man smile with pleasure at his cooking success. "You know," Hiro says conversationally, calmer now, pressing their foreheads together, "the best thing about waffle birthday cakes is getting to share them with you."

They hold each other, not even a year after the events that could have prevented them from sharing any more birthday celebrations, and appreciate the simple things like waffles.
