Sarah Jane thought she must be hearing things. Surely he wouldn't return so soon. It had only been four months? What could have happened? Walking slowly, as to not get her hopes up, Sarah Jane made her way to the back garden. It was Christmas time, again. Snow was falling lightly outside, covering everything in a thin blanket of snow, like a fog rolling over hills.

The TARDIS stood out brilliantly in the snow. Sarah Jane, still considering whether to be happy or worried, stepped out into the cold. The freezing air hit her like a bucket of water. But she didn't dare go back inside for her jacket, just in case that if she came back it would be gone.

Where's -?

On cue, The Doctor stepped out of the TARDIS. His face was drawn and he was definitely paler. His eyes were glossy, like they ad been shedding tears, but they were neither red, nor puffy. But there was something missing in them, like a candle light that had been snuffed out. He walked slowly up to her.

Sarah Jane glanced behind him, but the doors didn't open a second time. Her heart made a horrible lurch as she asked the question to herself. Where's Rose?

As if he could read her mind, The Doctor answered.

He spoke just three words, his voice cracking beneath them.

"I lost her..."

Sarah Jane saw what little colour that was left on his proud face leave it.

"Oh Doctor," she said comfortingly.

"I couldn't keep her..."

Sarah Jane placed her arms around his shoulders and hugged him. It was a childish embrace, one describing the simplest of friendships, but what else could she do. So, she just stood there in the snow, comforting The Doctor, who had just lost his companion. But Rose was so much more than that. She was part of The Doctor. And even though Sarah Jane could hear both hearts beating in his chest, she knew that one of The Doctor's hearts was with Rose, where ever she was. She knew The Doctor would not heal fully.

And she knew, this would be his last visit.
