Today was the day. He could remember every night spent lying awake, fantasizing about this moment. He couldn't help the grin that split across his face as he hopped around the room trying to place his legs into his jeans. 'It's definitely gotta look cool, but it has to be strong too. Couldn't hurt if it was a little cute...girls like cute Pokémon, right?"
After finally managing to get both of his legs into his pants, the trainer to be wasted no time in throwing on a white sleeved t-shirt followed by a green hoodie with black sleeves. With one last smile to himself the young man grabbed his glasses from his nightstand and charged out of his room and toward the stairs. 'Gotta get their quick the faster I get my partner the faster I get to becoming a Pokémon master. Just you wait Espada I'm on my-' His thoughts were interrupted by his own foot missing the third step of the staircase, causing him to go tumbling down. After hitting his head on practically every step the young man finally landed at the bottom of the staircase, dizzy and in pain.
"Finn, you know that there are much easier ways to come downstairs than rolling down them, right?"
The swirling shapes slowly fused into one familiar person. Tall and round, Finn's father stared down at the teen with crossed arms and a smirk as Finn sat up straight and scratched the back of his neck.
"My bad, I'm just dying to head over to the professor's place and get my partner." His dad chuckled in response before hauling Finn to his feet.
"Keep running down stairs like that and you really will be. Now come on, your mother made breakfast."
The teen's shoulders slumped. "Aw come on dad I can eat later."
"You can yes. But you're going to eat now." With that his father turned around and made his way back into the kitchen. Finn opened his mouth to protest but was cut off by the growl. "It sounds like your stomach agrees with me too."
'Traitor...' Defeated and outnumbered, Finn dragged himself into the kitchen and plopped himself into the closet seat. The sounds of a commentator caught his attention and Finn turned to look at the T.V that was set up on the counter nearby. "Don't worry it's just a rerun of last night, they've been playing it over and over again since it ended. If I didn't know any better I'd say we had a new champion." Finn smiled as a plate of waffles was placed on the table in front of him. The region of Espada hadn't seen a new champion in many years, not unusual, but what made it so unique was just who exactly the champion currently was.
On the T.V were two men, one was in a suit and holding a microphone while the other towered over him with his arms crossed over a shirtless chest. He wore a pair of golden spandex with a golden boot on each foot and around his neck was a golden cape that fell to just below his waist. And then there was the mask, just as shiny as the rest of his outfit it was accentuated with a silver poke ball design directly over his face.
"Ladies and gentlemen, fresh from yet another successful defense of his title El Ray has generously agreed to an interview with yours truly. Now, El Ray, this time you defended your title from one of the elite four. Tell me, what was going through your mind during such a match?"
The interviewer raised the microphone so El Ray could speak, and without the smile ever leaving his face El Ray responded. "Of course, El Ray had to think very hard during such a battle, never once could he lower his guard or else the tides would turn in the favor of El Ray's opponent, El Ray had no time to consider anything else."
"And what would you say was the deciding factor in this battle?" El Ray paused and brought a hand to his chin, eyes staring up at some imaginary object. Until he threw one arm wide and acted as if he were clutching something. "El Ray would tell you passion won him the day, yet such a statement would insult my fellow warrior. No, the reason that El Ray stood victorious today was because he has faced one hundred stampeding Rhyhorn without batting an eye. He has wrestled the mightiest of Ursaring's without a single drop of sweat falling from his face. He has outsmarted the wisest of Alakazam's while cleaning his toes. El Ray stands before you as champion not because his heart beats louder or his spirit screams the most. El Ray stands before you because he has the experience of a champion!"
A snort from Finn's father took him away from the moment, his dad shook his head from his position at the counter before looking at Finn from the corner of his eye. "Can you believe this guy? Anytime you put a camera in front of his face it's always the same nonsense. I have no idea why anyone still buys this stuff."
"The kids believe it. And that's reason enough for him to keep up the act." Finn's mom cut into the conversation while cleaning some dishes. "I mean, have you seen his newest movie? The acting is pretty bad but because the kids love him it's one of the highest grossing films of the year."
Finn's dad shook his head and looked back toward the T.V. "I'll give the man this though, he sure knows how to handle a Pokémon, especially those fighting types of his. And don't even get me started on that Lucario." Finn smiled at the praise, El Ray was a walking cornball filled with bad catchphrases and a persona that was eight feet tall. But he was the champion for a reason.
"-It was a pleasure talking with you El Ray. Before You go, do you have anything to say to your fans back home?"
Somehow the smile of El Ray grew even larger as he took the microphone from the interviewers' hand and held it dramatically in the air. "To those of you watching El Ray, know that he is eternally grateful for everything that you do. And remember that the heart of El Ray beats the same beat as you, that El Ray breathes the same breath as you do. Remember that under the mask of El Ray is the face of a man, and one day you too may stand on the stage of El Ray. Remember-" The T.V suddenly turned off leaving Finn to stare at a pitch-black screen. "Remember to buy all of El Ray's merchandise." Finn blinked twice at his dad's poor impression of the champ. With a small sigh Finn stood up and brought his now empty plate over to the sink.
"So, Finn how much longer do you think the champ has before someone dethrones him? I give it a few more years."
Finn let himself smile at the question before making his way over to the door to put on his shoes. "I don't know about years dad, after all I'll be challenging him before he knows it." His dad laughed in response while his mother only smiled before peering over her shoulder.
"Remember to come right back home after you meet with professor Palm. I'll have your bag packed for your trip." With one last smile at his parents Finn opened the front door and raced toward the home of the professor.

The lab was big, much bigger than he remembered it being yesterday. Finn felt a lump form in his throat as he stared up at the imposing building. 'Alright, this is it. I just go in there and everything becomes real.' Awkwardly pulling his smile into place Finn made his way toward the front of the building and placed his hand on the doorknob. The cool metal seemed to freeze his hand in place and his breathing became much shallower. With one last breath in Finn twisted the handle and stepped into the building, only to immediately freeze at what he saw. The place was a mess; papers scattered all over the floor, chairs thrown about randomly and tables turned on their side. "Professor Palm? Are you here? Is anybody here?"
Cautiously Finn made his way forward, calling out the whole time he did. 'Did the place get robbed? Why didn't anyone notice? Should I... Should I call someone? What if they stole the starter Pokémon!? What's gonna happen to me?' The sound of someone descending stairs pulled Finn from his thoughts. Despite common sense telling him otherwise Finn couldn't get his feet to move. Stuck in his spot Finn could only watch as the person descending the stairs made its way down. The first thing he saw was their bare feet, he next saw a pair of grey track pants alongside a white shirt under a white lab coat, both were covered in stains from what he assumed was lemonade and what he hoped was chocolate. Finally, the head of the person came into view, shaggy blond hair that fell past his eyes obscuring them from view and a goatee that had grown slightly too thick. The man was holding a cup of coffee with both hands while descending the staircase.
Finn felt himself breathe a sigh of relief. 'Professor Palm.' His fear averted Finn took a step forward to speak with the professor, however Palm caught sight of him first and unlike Finn had a much more animated reaction.
"Aaahhh!" Both hands flew into the air sending his coffee cup flying high before it crashed into the ground sending shards of glass and splashes of coffee everywhere. Both men stared at the accident in silence before Palm looked at Finn and raised both of his hands, as if saying this was entirely his fault. For his part Finn merely stood there slack jawed at the events that had just unfolded.
"Well done sir, it's rare to catch me off guard yet you have done so but I assume you didn't just break into my lab just to make me spill my drink. So, speak up thief, tell me what you want." Finn couldn't seem to find his voice and simply stood there opening and closing his mouth.
"Not going to talk eh? I can respect a crook who can hold their tongue but I will have my answers criminal or my name is Mycroft L. Palm." "I'm not a criminal!" Both stood silent at the sudden outburst from Finn, the professor tilted his head and crossed his arms before unfolding them and scratching the back of his head. "Come again?"
"I didn't break in. My name is Finn Hook and I'm here for my starter Pokémon." Palm stood like a statue for a few moments seemingly swallowing the new information and trying to figure out if it was real or not. Until Palm slammed his fist into an open hand and smiled. "Oh yeah, that was today." Without another second Palm got on his hands and knees and began to move papers around, all the while he mumbled something unintelligible to himself.
Finn pinched the bridge of his nose at what he was watching and shook his head. 'This man is one of the greatest minds in Espada?'
"Aha! I knew I left it in this pile." At the professors' exclamation Finn looked up and saw that he was being waved over. As soon as he took a step forward he felt the crunch of something that wasn't paper and looked down to see that he had stepped on a pen. Just beside it was a hastily scribbled note that read "I QUIT!"
'That is honestly not as surprising as it should be.'
"Ahem." Finn was pulled from his thoughts and looked up at professor Palm who was waving him over slightly faster. With a sigh Finn made his way over to the professor and sat down on a chair that had been returned to its proper position. Taking a seat across from the man Finn couldn't keep his eyes from scanning over every single mess that occupied the room. 'There is no floor. Only garbage.'
"Name?"
"What?"
"Your name, you said it was Win Cook right?"
"No, it's Finn Hook."
He was offered only a shrug in response before Palm scribbled something down on the paper. "Whatever you say man. Boy or girl?"
"Uh... boy."
"You sure?"
Finn felt his eye twitch. "Yes. I'm sure."
Palm put both his hands up in a placating gesture. "Someone's a little testy today. You should try drinking coffee. I know that's what I was doing before someone made me spill it."
"Is there a point to this?"
Palm shrugged before spinning his paper around and showing Finn that he hadn't written anything down, instead he had doodled a flower on a blank piece of paper. "Not really." He then crumpled the paper and threw it against a wall before standing up and making his way over to a machine. Leaving Finn sitting there with his eyes popped out of their sockets. 'He's an idiot.'
"The starter Pokémon is an important partner in the life of a trainer. They show you everything you need to know about being a Pokémon trainer, most of the time. Other times it's a mess, don't ask me about the other times. Regardless your starting Pokémon will be there for you, so be there for him." Palm pressed a few buttons on the machine he stood in front of before a poke ball was spat out into his waiting hand.
Finn watched it all happen in slow motion as professor Palm made his way over and held out the poke ball toward him. "Take good care of him."
The ball dropped into Finn's hand and with a nod from the professor Finn threw the ball into the air. "I choose you!"
A jagged red beam shot out of the poke ball and hit the ground. It took the shape of two small circular shapes and slowly took on a solid form. When his partner finally came into reality Finn stared at his partner with a blank look. 'Really?'
