Addiction
"I'm going to ask her to marry me, Lily," Scorpius said softly, his face still buried in the soft, bare skin of her stomach.
Lily didn't respond immediately, instead taking a moment to lite a cigarette, a recent addiction. "Which one?" she asked after a light haze of smoke filled the air in front of her.
Scorpius raised himself to his elbows to look at her. "What do you mean, 'which one'?"
She rolled her eyes and stuck the white stick into the crystal ash tray by her bedside. "Please, I've smelled at least two different perfumes on you this past month."
Scorpius' face reddened and he dragged his hand through his blond hair. "I picked one of them."
"Which one?" she asked again.
Her lover was silent for a moment. "The one I can live with," he said carefully.
Lily laughed hollowly. "Isn't it supposed to be 'the one I can't live without'?" she mocked him coldly.
"Well, she already said no, so.." Scorpius sighed as he rolled out from between the cotton sheets. "next best thing."
"So you're going to get married and lie to her about where you sleep every other night?" Lily smiled suggestively.
Scorpius grabbed his boxers and jeans from across the room. "We'd be over, we might even be over right now," he said as he strained to stay calm.
"But you can't live without me, you just admitted," she said as she crawled towards the edge of the bed.
"Well I guess I will have to learn," he said as he threw her shirt into her face.
"Oh come on Scor-"
"I'm ready to settle down Lily! I didn't ask you to marry me last year just as a passing fancy!" he yelled suddenly, fisting his dark grey shirt. "But, you said no and I've waited long enough for you to change your mind. I still want to be settled down."
Lily was stunned into silence. "Just stay here with me, just like we are now," she said weakly.
He laughed hoarsely as he did up his last few buttons. "Maybe I want more than we are now. I want to be able to admit to people who I'm thinking about when my eyes glaze over during meetings, who I'm taking out to dinner-"
"We don't go out for dinner."
"Well maybe I'd like to take you out to dinner!" he shouted. "If you could just let me lo-"
"Don't!"
"Why? Why is it such a crime that I might – that I do – love you?"
"Love gets complicated. Love always leaves," she replied.
He gave her a long cold stare. "Well this time it certainly is," he said softly.
Lily watched as he turned and strode out of the door.
A/N: Not my usual type of fic, but I am trying to get over some writing block on my other fics. I hope you enjoyed this short little diddy anyway! Leave me some thoughts (even if you hated it).
