I wrote this about six months ago and forgot to post it hehe. This is rather a cliché setting now, but I figured that I'd just post it anyway. Enjoy.

Pensive

Oblivion. That was what Raito expected the moment his heart stopped beating. In a strange way, he had almost come to look forward to it. The battle-wearied soldier in him smiled and stepped toward it eagerly. An overwhelming peace came over him and washed away his rage, hatred and pain. He felt like he did before he became Kira. The tension that had existed within him since he had decided on killing off all of the criminals dissipated. All of what he'd considered extremely important in life seemed irrelevant and petty.

His soul tore free of his body with a severed chain trailing behind it. To his complete shock, the first thing he saw was a figure with a thatch of messy raven hair. Raito felt his blood run cold, but that was a ridiculous statement of course. How can one feel the blood that runs through his or her veins if there are no such vessels to speak of? Raito was confused by it. Why was he here and why wasn't he fading to nothing?

L approached him with a pensive look on his face. "I never expected you to beg for your life, Raito – kun," he said quietly.

Raito avoided eye contact humiliated that L had seen what he had done only a few moments previously. "I thought that I was to go to nothingness when I died."

At that very moment they were suspended in midair quite comfortably overlooking the scene where the investigation team and the SPK stood talking to Ryuk.

"Haven't you though?" L mused. "After all, even nothing is a something."

"That's true. I never really had time to think about it."

"Too caught up in murdering people?"

"You know there was more to it than that, Ryuzaki." Apparently things still mattered when it came to L.I wonder if it is because he played a big role in my life, or if it's because he's dead as well, Raito thought.

"You meant well, but it was evil."Both apparently.

Raito shuddered at the echo from years past. "Only because we are taught that way."

"That was why it was wrong, Yagami – kun."

L chose this moment to crouch in his trademark sitting position. "You are almost completely disconnected with your body," he commented.

Raito looked down and saw that it was true. His astral chain was fading fast. It glowed a brilliant blue quite suddenly before dissipated into thin air. Yet Raito could sense its energy traveling to something else. He felt oddly light without the binding to his body. The sudden urge to flap his arms like a bird would its wings came over him and see if he would float higher. It took him less than a second to dispel that childish fantasy.

"You know I did regret killing you."

L cast his gaze down at Raito's body before saying anything. "I know," he said simply. He gestured to the scene in front of him. "I've been watching this play out since I've died."

"Would you have regretted catching me and signing my death sentence?" Raito asked.

L brought his thumb to his lips and nibbled on it thoughtfully. "I would not have regretted bringing about Kira's death, but I would have regretted Light Yagami's."

The admission surprised Raito. "I didn't expect you to feel that way."

"You always seem to be surprised about me Raito – kun."

Raito nodded. "Do you know what's beyond here?"

"Nothing, everything and certainly something, Raito – kun." came the ambiguous reply.
