At noon Baatar stepped into the house. From down the hall he heard the wails of his daughter. It had been two months since she had been born. His time off had been come to an end so he had to return to work. Leaving Kuvira to care for their daughter during the day. He always stepped in and helped whenever he could. When Kiara woke during the night, Kuvira always insisted that she would take care of her. Sometimes he felt left out when it came to caring for Kiara. Many times Kuvira would push him out of the way and take over when he did something wrong. It hurt when she did that, he wanted to be part of her life too. Walking through the house Baatar noted that it was a mess. Dishes were piling up in the sink, clothes and baby toys were scattered all over the living room. It was hard caring for a newborn they hadn't had time to clean the house.
In Kiara's room Kuvira sat rocking the crying child. She looked exhausted dark circles loomed under her dark green eyes. She was still in her pajamas, hair in a sloppy bun. "I don't know what she wants, she's not hungry, and she doesn't need a diaper change she's just complaining." Kuvira said when she spotted Baatar in the doorway.
"Here let me take her for a while."
"No I'm her mother I can do it." Kuvira hissed out angrily causing Kiara to wail louder.
"Kuvira sweetheart you're exhausted I think she's picking up on your stress. Let me take her I'm her dad I want to spend time with her."
Kuvira looked away from Baatar holding back tears. Her hormones were still out of whack. "I'm a bad mother I can't even calm my own child."
"No, you are not a bad mother." Baatar assured her. "You are a fantastic mother you're just a little tired that's all. A nice long nap is going to make you feel better." Baatar promised, gently Kuvira gave Kiara over to Baatar. Standing Kuvira went to the master bedroom to lie down. Baatar took Kiara outside sitting on the porch swing soothing the crying infant.
"Shhh, Shhh its okay Kiara daddy's here now. Calm down my sweet girl." Baatar rocked her, her cries lessening in volume but still persistent. So he sung to her, "Don't judge me too hard I don't have the best singing voice." Baatar sung "Four Season, "Girls from Ba Sing Se, and Secret tunnel.
Built a path together, something la da no one knows the next words,
Secret tunnel, secret tunnel through the mountains,
Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel! Yeah!
At the end Baatar pulled a funny face which made Kiara laugh. He tickled her belly causing her to gurgle in delight. He brought her up to his face kissing the tip of her nose. He swung them back and forth he couldn't believe that they had ever talked about aborting her. Cradling her, Baatar went back inside setting her in the play pen. Finding a dirty laundry basket, Baatar gathered the dirty clothes from around the house and began washing them. He went back and forth between cleaning up the house and checking up on Kiara. So far she was content in the play pen. The only time she started crying was when she needed a diaper change. Baatar was quick to change her, he knew that her cries would wake up Kuvira. And Kuvira was in desperate need of some sleep. After finishing the majority of the chores Baatar entertained his daughter. He dangled a variety of toys in front of her. She would reach up and swat at them. A sweet smile on her face eventually her dark green eyes began closing. Baatar took her to her crib setting her down running his hand over the curve of her head before leaving. He left the door open just a crack. Going back to the laundry he took the damp clothes to dry and started to wash another load.
He periodically checked up on both of his girls. Kuvira and Kiara remained peacefully asleep. Returning to the chores Baatar took the dry clothes and folded them. Creeping silently into the room Kuvira was in putting the cleaned clothes back in their proper place. Poking his head into the nursery, he saw that Kiara was awake. Lifting her out of the crib he took her out to the living room. Baatar set his daughter back in the play pen. Moving to see what he could prepare for dinner. Rifling through the cabinets he saw that they were pretty low on food. Baatar started a grocery list he was about to go check if they needed any more baby supplies when Kiara started to cry. Setting the list down, Baatar leaned down and scooped up his daughter. Patting her bottom, she didn't need a diaper change. He grabbed a binky putting in her mouth only for her to spit it back out.
"What is it are you hungry? Ah you must be its, been a while since you last fed." Baatar fetched a bottle bringing it her lips. She suckled for a minute before rejecting the bottle cries beginning again.
"What is it? Was it too hot?" Baatar felt the bottle it was cold. He had forgotten to warm it up how stupid. With a whimpering Kiara in one arm Baatar placed a pan on the stove setting the bottle in it to warm up.
"Shhh sweetheart daddy's getting your bottle ready." Baatar tried to lessen her cries but they were increasing in volume and he was becoming flustered. Feeling the bottle it was still not the right temperature yet. He turned up the heat to speed up the process. "No, no don't cry please Kiara don't wake up your mother." Baatar brought her up to his shoulder patting her back to calm her. It wasn't working her crying continued and he smelled something burning.
"Oh shit." Baatar cursed the bottle was melting he had forgotten to put water in the pan. The door to their bedroom opened, Kuvira was up. Taking the handle of the pan Baatar deposited it into the sink running water over it. The pan hissed and sizzled steam emitting from it.
"Give her here Baatar she's hungry." Kuvira said already reaching for their daughter. Lifting Kiara from Baatar's shoulder she took the infant to the couch. Pulling up her shirt up Kuvira brought her daughter to her breast. Kiara ceased her crying as she latched on. Baatar joined them on the couch putting on arm over Kuvira's shoulders.
"I'm sorry to have woken you up." Baatar said.
"It's okay I prefer to breast feed her anyways." Kuvira replied. "What happened with her bottle?"
"I was warming up her bottle but it wasn't getting hot enough fast enough so I turned up the heat. She was crying you were sleeping and I didn't want her cries to wake you up. So I got a little distracted with trying to calm her down."
"Sounds like you got a little stressed out."
"Yeah maybe just a little bit." Baatar reached to stroke Kiara's cheek. Her dark eyes briefly met his when he came in contact with the soft skin. He smiled suppressing the urge to take her in his arms. Sometimes it felt surreal that they had this amazing little person in their lives. They had heard news that the empireā¦earth kingdom was doing very well without them there. Avatar Korra was keeping good on her promise despite how much Raiko was pushing for Wu to assume authority over the nation. On rare occasions Baatar wished that his family would get to know his daughter. Maybe the knowledge of Su's first grandchild would help match things up between her and Kuvira. But he knew better, his mother had an enormous amount of hatred towards Kuvira for causing the "death" of her son.
Baatar stood to prepare dinner when Kuvira brought Kiara to her shoulder to burp her. The sound of laugher and gurgling filled his ears. He wanted to go over there and play with their daughter too.
"Kuvira dinner's ready." He called.
"Okay be right there." She said putting her daughter in the play pen. They ate in comfortable silence Kiara would make the occasional sounds. "Oh I forgot to ask what you were doing home so early you weren't fired were you?"
"I got some paternity leave."
"Paternity leave?" Kuvira questioned. She had heard of maternity leave.
"Yeah I asked my boss what the policies were and managed to get 12 weeks off with pay well half of what I make anyways. It's a pretty good deal right?"
"But why? Not that I'm not grateful to have help with her."
"Because I don't want you to feel like you have to do everything. I want to help out more. Plus when I'm at work all I can think of is her and you."

Baatar and Kuvira lay in bed with Kiara in between them. Baatar held onto one of her tiny hands. Kiara was fighting to stay awake but sleep was winning out on the little girl.
"I wish she could stay here with us." Baatar said in a soft voice.
"You know why she can't, we could accidently crush her or she could suffocate in the bedding. But maybe when she's older."
"Yeah, when she's older." Part of Baatar didn't want his daughter to get older. He wanted her to remain a little kid forever being young and innocent. One day she would know what her parents had done. The good and the bad that they had done in the Earth Kingdom.
Baatar scooted a little closer to Kiara, her eyes had closed already. He drew light circles around her cheeks causing Kiara to stir at the disturbance.
"I'm going to take her to her room." Kuvira whispered.
"Do you have to?"
"Yes." As carefully as she could Kuvira lifted her daughter from their bed and walked into the nursery. Laying her in the metal crib she felt Baatar's arms go around her waist. The new parents stared down at their little girl they couldn't help but to admire her. She was all there's something they had created and loved together.
Over the course of the twelve weeks Baatar was at home, Kuvira had found a part time job working at a dance studio. More than once when she was at work he had dissolved into tears when Kiara cried. She wanted her mother but eventually he was able to quell her. Being a stay at home parent was hard on both Kuvira and Baatar but it was worth it seeing their daughter smile and laugh.
