I'm finishing off many of the KageHina fics in my folders ranging from all types of fluffy shit so please do enjoy this one
Maybe it was the warm temperature that softened Kageyama that day. Maybe it was the evening sky that made Hinata less anxious than usual. It was a small chance that they were influenced by the chilly weather, and an easy excuse to tell their teammates, but in that moment, Kageyama and Hinata for once relaxed in each others company.
A successful practice and praise from Ukai and Takeda held the team's morale high that day. Sawamura treated his teammates to meat buns, much to their appreciation.
Ennoshita joined in for once to their trip very modestly with Tanaka's amazing persuasion/shoving it down your throat until you agree skills. Kinoshita and Narita came along with hesitation, but Asahi nervously remarked "Y-you're part of the team, so you're very important to winning!" ("Asahi, you're terrible at speeches!") Kinoshita heartily laughed, slapping the embarrassed Narita on the back.
Tsukishima and Yamaguchi mildly chatted with each other during the walk, and Sugawara smiled. Ever since the training camp in Tokyo, the team has been much more linked and in rhythm than ever. His smile soon was pointed to two young boys behind everyone else; Kageyama and Hinata.
Kageyama was pointing out something on Hinata's bike, which made him angry and start a conversation how his bike was not ugly and that it had feelings too. Sugawara decided to leave them be and catch up with Sawamura.
Everyone seemed to go separate ways after retrieving their food, so Kageyama and Hinata had gone their own way and waved goodbye. Conversation was temporarily paused, chewing and the click, click, click of Hinata's bike being their only communication. Hinata glanced over at the taller boy, who was very invested where to bite next into his curry bun. He noted that Kageyama was very indecisive.
Hinata curiously asked, "Shouldn't you have left at the last intersection?"
A blank face stared back at him. "..oh, yeah. I guess?" Kageyama finished his last bite, stopping momentarily. Hinata turned.
"What do you mean? Or were you just stupid and forgot where your house is? Ooooh, that's what it is, isn't it? You need to use your head more, dummy!"
Kageyama growled, placing his hands back into his jersey pockets. "You talk too much, dumbass."
He smiled, softly mumbling an "I know" to himself. Hinata didn't push anymore questions, and Kageyama didn't mention anything else.
As they walked up the steep road, Hinata paused and looked around. Kageyama stared at him questioningly.
"Kageyama, I remembered."
"Remembered what?"
Hinata fumbled with the handles of his bike nervously. "The forest is really cool. We can explore it together."
Kageyama flinched. He asked why they should when it was already evening.
"Because! Don't you wanna do some super hardcore parkour like those cool people on TV?! There will be cool trees and logs and I never explored it yet because I wanted to explore with you!"
The setter looked down pitifully at the ball of fury, but went along with the adventure. "You're probably just scared to go alone."
"I'm not!"
They went deep into the clash of branches and leaves, but not too far away that they couldn't find their way back. Hinata turned on the front light on his bike for good measure.
The duo reached a small open space with large trees surrounding them, and the top open to see the sky. Hinata wanted to jump around and climb the trees, but Kageyama's threat if he got injured before the Spring Tournament with his deathly blank smile was enough to stop him. They settled on a log laying to the side, so Kageyama pulled himself on top and stared at Hinata setting his bike against a nearby tree. He easily ran towards Kageyama and jumped up next to him. The sky was still a warm orange, much to Kageyama's relief. He'd rather not go home when it was midnight. It would matter much anyway since no one was going to be home.
"I think this feels nice." Hinata spoke, swinging his legs. Kageyama was startled and snapped out of his head. The middle blocker turned towards Kageyama, smiling a vague smile. "It feels like we're friends or something."
The comforting warm setting Kageyama felt somehow was concentrating to his cheeks. He vaguely smiled back at Hinata, saying "I don't ever want to be friends with a stupid idiot like you."
Hinata's eyes widened, color seeping into his face. It was definitely an insult, he knew that much. But... he sounded as if he was kind.
Whatever feelings he felt for Kageyama when they had that serious fight during training camp, regarding if they could at least be teammates, went out the window. He didn't expect to feel a sense of care towards Kageyama, and recieve the same back. Whatever feelings he had for Kageyama that he shamelessly refused for the last couple of months rose from the surface, and he reddened.
By this time Kageyama had stopped smiling and brought out the volleyball he had in his bag. He was spinning it in his hands idly. Hinata coughed, unintentionally bringing up Kageyama's attention. He cleared his throat nervously, his interest on the tree to the right of them growing.
"I think I love you, Kageyama."
Maybe Hinata expected a more hostile response, because the answer he got back was way more straight forward than he anticipated. Kageyama pouted. "Why is everything always 'I think'? Make up your mind, dammit..."
"I love you!" Hinata clenched, his eyes almost tearing up and his body way too embarrassed to face anyone. "Is that good enough now?!"
"Whoa, hey now," Kageyama stated. The spinning of the ball momentarily stopped, and was held in his palms silently for who knows how long. Hinata honestly was about to give up just then and there because Kageyama was an idiot and didn't understand much besides food and volleyball.
"Look Kageyama I-"
"youreokay"
Staring eyes fell onto Kageyama. "Huh?"
Kageyama was clutching the volleyball, incredibly irritated and embarrassed in the world. Hinata wanted to laugh at him, but it really wasn't the time. He was afraid the volleyball would be flat by the time Kageyama calmed down.
"iloveyoutoo" Kageyama coughed.
"Dude speak up!" Hinata whined. "I don't know what you're saying."
Did Hinaya realize how close they were at this point? He could give Kageyama a hug at the radius they were in together. Kageyama sighed, slapping the volleyball to the side with one hand and using the other to cover his face.
"I.. something you."
Hinata looked at Kageyama, and the way he warbled and the expressions he beared only meant one thing or another. A smile grew on his face and a laugh escaped his lips. He slid himself very close to Kageyama, leaning his head on his shoulder.
"You're just.." Hinata whispered. "You're so dumb."
The smile stayed on his face when Kageyama leaned his head against Hinata's in response. Kageyama grasped Hinata's hand, fumbling with his fingers. "You need to be careful when you crack your fingers like a dumbass, if you do it wrong you're hands will die and you'll never be able to play volleyball ever again."
"How scary!" Hinata exclaimed, allowing Kageyama's hand to explore his blistered palms. He was surprised that Kageyama was so gentle, despite everything being so grumpy and harsh about him. His hand was even more rough than Hinata's, and it amazed him.
Kageyama loved him. That was enough to lift a huge weight off his chest. If it lingered on his body any longer, he was sure it was going to be in the way and ruin everyday life. He didn't admit it fully, but that was just Kageyama and all the more why he loved the guy back. Maybe Hinata became gay for him. ..That was most likely the reason.
"Hey, stop it" Hinata started. "This feels too sappy and romantic."
"But I want to touch you." Kageyama admitted. Hinata sputtered.
"When can we do other stuff?" Kageyama grumbled. Hinata choked.
"W-what?!" Hinata screeched. "Ughhhh..." He buried his face into Kageyama's lap embarassed. "I don't know... kissing is pretty cool?"
"Then can I kiss you?"
"Do you know how?"
"No."
"..."
Hinata flipped around onto his back, gazing straight up at Kageyama. Kageyama was looking down with the stupid grumpy look on his face as usual. Hinata breathed. "I want to kiss you, but I feel like if we start this early we won't sto- mhph."
Hinata's reasoning fell into a pit of lava because Kageyama was kissing him and nothing else seemed to be relevant at the moment. They were terrible at it, but a couple seconds in they've learned from their mistakes and knew a good amount of information to kiss at least decently. Kageyama's gentle nature was translated through his kissing as well and Hinata couldn't stop the tingling warm feeling in his stomache because of it. He swore he moaned softly at one point, and before he could pull away in a pitiful fashion, Kageyama held him closer, kissing his lips softly multiple times. Hinata responded by grasping Kageyama arms, kissing even deeper than before.
When they pulled away, Hinata grinned at Kageyama's flushed face. He glanced away, his eyebrows even deeper than usual.
"You get all the crap you want, don't you.." Kageyama murmered, gripping his head. Hinata let out a "hmph" sound, letting his head sit against Kageyama's lap and stomach. He wrapped his arms around his torso and hugged tightly.
"You're the one who got too excited. I just went with it."
"So you didn't actually want to?"
"Of course I want to.. I want to be with you all the time." Hinata grumbled. "No frickle frackling though until we're super manly adults."
"'Manly' is the last thing I would describe you." Kageyama huffed.
"Would 'hot' be the first, then?" Hinata cheekily grinned up at Kageyama. Kageyama choked on the air, proving Hinata's victory. Instead of denial, Hinata got an answer he would remember for the longest time.
"You already have the answer to that, you shithead.." He swelled. Hinata laughed, blushing.
"I know."
"We ended up confessing to each other and making out." Kageyama sighed. Hinata colored, gripping his bike tighter. How does that happen?
"Maybe next time we could actually explore, or play volleyball there." Hinata suggested. He played with his bike headlight as they approached Hinata's house. Kageyama muttered some words Hinata didn't understand, but he shrugged it off and approached his front door. He tied his bike up and turned around to face Kageyama, holding his bag strap.
"So..." He smiled. Kageyama scowled. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"I know that stupid," Kageyama punched him in the shoulder, making Hinata whine.
Kageyama was swaying like he was going to leave just like that, but Hinata caught up with it and frowned. "You aren't going to say goodbye?"
"Oh," He yawned. "sorry."
The setter hugged him close, snuggling his face into the crook of Hinata's neck. Hinata grew pink and hugged back welcomingly. Kageyama sqirmed under Hinata's hold very awkwardly, but the look of comfort on his face told Hinata he was alright. They stayed like that for a minute, until Kageyama pulled away, gripping the top of Hinata's head gently.
"We better work twice as hard tomorrow, as a duo, and as a team." Kageyama determinedly spoke. Hinata smirked, holding Kageyama's wrist above him.
"Of course!"
Hinata stared as Kageyama walked away, sticking his tongue out and being rewarded with the wonderful middle finger. He wondered if he learned it from Tanaka. He probably did.
And as Kageyama was almost out of sight and had given a worried wave goodbye, for once in his life, Hinata knew he was infatuated. And he giggled, knowing it would never fade.
Only he and his jerk of a boyfriend knew that truth.
